A couple of years ago, a young man burst onto the Hallmark scene, and while I had no idea who Tyler Hynes was at the time, I knew I wanted to interview him. Immediately! I reached out, and an instant connection and partnership were established. Since that time, Tyler has become one of Hallmark’s “hotties” who seems to tackle any role given to him. It just cannot be Christmas without a new Hallmark movie from Tyler, and thankfully, he and I were able to chat again in anticipation of On the 12th Date of Christmas. Please enjoy my latest conversation with this impeccable and authentic man himself!

RH: Tyler, it’s so great to chat with you again!

TH: Great to chat with you too, Ruth.

I know things are really crazy in our world right now, but I choose to focus on the positive. How are things with you, Tyler?

Oh, things are good with me. I recently got a cottage up north of the city that I will be renovating with a buddy of mine. And then with the Hallmark Christmas movie coming out this weekend and another movie coming to theaters, all is great. Also, with it being fall, things are really pretty up here.

That’s great news, Tyler! I knew about your Christmas movie. I caught a clip from it on the Christmas preview special Hallmark showed recently. And seeing you in that clip just made me stop and say, “Tyler, you have become this tremendous Hallmark actor.” I was thinking of where you were just a couple of years ago, and now you’re this Hallmark actor that fits the bill perfectly. I recently watched the rebroadcast of Falling For You, the first Hallmark movie of yours that aired, and I could see how much you have matured and come into your own. It’s amazing to see where you were then and where you are now.

That’s nice to hear, Ruth. In every movie, I try to get more of a grip on things and try to take plenty of different approaches. I think we’ve kind of hit a stride in every movie to improve it a little bit more and more. I will try to keep that going just as much as I can. There are always hurdles in these movies to overcome so that you can give good performances in those circumstances. I think the more I’ve done, the more I’ve understood the right sort of way to navigate those tricks and things and make it a better product experience and feel more comfortable, more interesting, and more dynamic.

Tyler & Lacey

Well, we last saw you on Hallmark at the beginning of the year with Lacey Chabert in Winter In Vail. That was such a fantastic movie. My goodness, every time that movie re-airs, people are always talking about how much they love that movie.

Oh yeah, how could that movie not have been fun? It was great to team up with Lacey. She is just so great and sweet and so secure and so fun to work with. The whole team we had on that was great, and the fact that we shot in the actual wintertime was a good situation.

But this Christmas movie coming up is gonna be good too. I just watched the movie the other day, and I think you guys are really gonna like it. It’s got a little different dynamic.

That’s great to hear. This is On the 12th Date of Christmas, right?

Yeah, that’s right.

And your co-star is…this is her first Hallmark, right?

Mallory Jansen, yes, she has been in a bunch of things. I think she’s maybe known most for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But this was her first Hallmark movie. She was amazing and very sweet. It was a little new to her, but she really enjoyed it. We had a lot of good times together and a lot of good laughs. I think everybody will be very, very, very happy with her and her performance.

So what can you tell us about this movie without giving away too much?

Well, it’s basically about a woman who is in the big city of Chicago though she’s originally from a smaller town. She’s been working at a company that plans events. There’s a scavenger hunt that figures into that. My character has already been working at the company for a while and is well-established. What it boils down to is a story about Mallory’s character finding her voice in her career and confidence and taking control of things in the way she knows she can. She is blossoming within her character, and at the beginning, my character is a bit of an adversary in that regard. Then, of course, that shifts as we get to know each other. I think it’s a really nice story about a woman finding her voice and finding her confidence in her career. And then finding a gentleman that she might be fond of.

Tyler Hynes, Mallory Jansen Credit: ©2020 Crown Media United States LLC/Photographer: Steven Ackerman

I remember seeing the previews about the scavenger hunt. She has some kind of app, right?

Yes, that’s correct.

Where did you film this movie?

We filmed it in Winnipeg. That was the first time for me filming one of these in Winnipeg. It was with a really great production company called Cartel. They do a lot of Hallmark movies. They had just come out of shooting Andrew Walker‘s Sweet Autumn, and ours was next in line. It was my first time in Winnipeg. It was beautiful, and we had a really great team. The times were very interesting in light of COVID, but everybody handled it like champs. It was a very good experience.

That’s good to know. Of course, I’m looking forward to all the Hallmark movies this season, but it’s nice that they brought you back.

Mallory Jansen, Tyler Hynes Credit: ©2020 Crown Media United States LLC/Photographer: Steven Ackerman

It’s a blessing despite the crisis. There were another couple of films in the works, but COVID shut those down and postponed them. They were really pushing to get these Christmas movies out, so that was a bit of a bottleneck. Everyone was trying to do their best.

I can’t believe Hallmark’s still doing forty Christmas movies. When they announced it, I was surprised. I was figuring about half of that, but this is amazing. I don’t know how they’re accomplishing it, but Hallmark seems to know what they’re doing to quickly turning out these movies.

It’s a talent unto itself; that’s for sure. These guys hold the record for doing a record number of movies at this time, that’s for sure.

Mallory Jansen, Tyler Hynes, Zoe Fish, Clare Filipow Credit: ©2020 Crown Media United States LLC/Photographer: Steven Ackerman

Exactly. And it sounds like this movie is going to be fun. We get to see you, and we also see you with a new Hallmark leading lady. I always think that’s fun when the network brings in new people. You used to be that new person, and now you get to work with a new leading lady.

I think it’s great. I think everybody’s gonna love Mallory a lot. Then Zoe Fish plays my niece, and she’s an adorable little human being who just lights up the screen when she’s on. Honestly, everybody in the cast was very sweet and on point. It’s got the nice Christmas vibe, and it’s a fun little ride, I think.

I’m glad you mentioned that you have another movie coming out in addition to the Hallmark one.

Yes, as of now, on November 10th, it’s scheduled to come out. It’s a WWII movie I did called Recon. It’s got a very talented cast attached to it. Alexander Ludwig plays the main character. Robert David Port is the director and writer, and it’s based on a book by Richard Bausch. It’s a really well-received book, and it’s based on true events from some of his father’s experiences. It’s a really interesting, emotional, suspenseful, thrilling WWII movie. We’re lucky to all be a part of it. It’s gonna be a good one. The producers have become a good friends of mine, and they’re excited about it. And we’ll be working together on something else, I’m sure, at some point.

I think I remember you mentioning this one, come to think of it. When did you film this one?

Maybe about two years ago.

That’s what I was thinking.

Yeah, right before I started doing Hallmark movies, I think.

That sounds right. I think you have alluded to it before in other interviews.

It’s a film that used to be called Peace. They changed the title recently to Recon.

Film Festival Recon

What a time to have a movie coming out when people are trying to go back to theaters.

Yeah, I’m not sure exactly what’s going on with all that, but I’m sure they are releasing it in a very safe way. Months back, I went to the movie theater when it was allowed to see Christopher Nolan’s new movie, and I was surprised. The environment was very safe. The seating was set up like it should be because of COVID, and I was like, “Wow, this is what it looks like during this time.” It is doable, so I hope people will be able to get out to see this movie.

Well, we’ve got lots to look forward to. So are you doing a giveaway for your Hallmark movie like we have in the past?

Yes, I’ve posted information all over social media, and if you could help me choose the winners–

Of course, I’d love to help!

I was able to snag nine items from this movie to giveaway.

The fans are going to be so excited! I think they are already entering.

Well, I plan to keep this tradition going as long as I possibly can. I think I will also be doing something for Sirius XM, so be sure to check out Hallmark Christmas radio on that. They asked me to do a Top Ten Christmas song list. So be sure to look that up. I’d like to get the fans and their stories involved, but I’m not sure if that will happen this year. But I’d like to see it happen at some point.

It’s so nice how you are always thinking of your fans. I mean, you’re a great actor, but one of your strengths with Hallmark has always been your interactions with the fans. You’ve gone out of your way to do that. Not all Hallmark actors can do that. I also like that you are so positive and don’t spend time posting negative and controversial posts. I admire and appreciate these qualities in you, Tyler.

Tyler Hynes Credit: ©2020 Crown Media United States LLC/Photographer: Steven Ackerman

I try my best. You know, my personal feeling is people should really focus on their loved ones and friends and family and not really focus on what public figures have to say. I just try to keep my head down and stay quiet for the most part. But when interacting with the fans, I like to keep it very genuine and very personal. There is something about this dynamic with fans that could feel really insincere, but I really want to maintain a nice, warm relationship with the fans where I don’t feel like I’m taking advantage of the fans or misusing this relationship we have in any way. I just try to keep it simple and make it fun for anybody who cares to participate.

Well, as you can imagine, people reach out to me about various actors, and I have never heard anything negative about you. Unless people don’t always like some of the movies or shows that you’re doing. Once in a while, people will ask, “Why did Tyler do thus and such?” And it’s like, “Well, because he’s an actor.” You do Hallmark, but you do other things too. And I always think that’s nice and smart. If fans don’t like the movies or shows you’re in, they don’t have to watch everything you’ve done.

I know it’s tricky. They want to be supportive, and I always appreciate the fans being supportive. But if they don’t feel comfortable watching something I’ve done, they don’t have to. I know their feelings come from a good place. They have this sense of pride that they found this actor, and they want to make that known to everyone and support them.

Well, I think it’s been great that you have been involved in so many other things. I love your Hallmark stuff, as do the fans, but it’s nice to see you in different roles from time to time as well.

Yeah, we’ve got a good body of work going. We’ve got a WWII film that’s suspenseful and emotional. We’ve got Letterkenny that’s funny and ridiculous. And we have Hallmark, which is good, warm, positive escapism. I think it’s a nice balance across the board.

So what did you do to keep yourself busy during the shutdown?

I know a lot of people are going through a lot of different things. When this started happening, I could see people around me–friends, family–having their own personal struggles and insecurities about things. I just took this opportunity to slow down and view it like a giant snow day. Where I could, I helped support others. I chose to focus on the things that were really important in my life–the people around me, and then I went searching for this cottage. Hopefully, this will be a positive experience for everybody and that they will end up recalibrating themselves and maybe even re-prioritizing things and taking a breath and being able to appreciate important things. And when things open back up again, I hope we’ll be all the more present and all the more considerate and more stable and be able to move from that place forward. That’s what I’m trying to do with my own circumstances and people in my life.

Mallory Jansen, Tyler Hynes Credit: ©2020 Crown Media United States LLC/Photographer: Steven Ackerman

That’s really good to hear. No matter how difficult things were for me, I found myself living in gratitude and not complaining. There were so many others who had it so much worse. It was a great reminder. I didn’t really have anything to complain about. I’m at home with my family, and I have a new job. I always thought I was a grateful person, but I’m even more so now.

Yeah, I fell the same way. I thought I was taking things in and being grateful and humble, but this experience has shown us that there’s still room for improvement. I think we all have our own sort of disappointments and struggles, and whether they’re comparable to somebody else is not entirely the point and doesn’t invalidate your own right to express your feelings. But at the same time, I think having a healthy perspective on everything is the way to go.

So, in addition to these movies, is there anything else upcoming that you can mention?

There’s another Star Wars project I’m doing with some friends of mine. They’ve been chipping away at some of it, and that’s going to be a big undertaking. I think they’re going to be dropping a trailer for that at some point. We’ll see what happens with that. It’s going to be epic and a nice addition to the sort of genres I’ve been doing.

As far as projects coming up, there’s a lot of talk from producers. Some are with Hallmark. I’m sort of taking things as they come. I had a buddy of mine whose restaurants just got re-closed down here in Canada. You can’t really plan for anything yet, but there are definitely options out there. I have nothing official to mention, but hopefully, there will be more in the new year.

Thank you so much for your time today, Tyler. We are very excited about On the 12th Date of Christmas this weekend, and on November 10th, we can hopefully see Recon.

Thank you, Ruth, for reaching out and for all your support. I hope everyone enjoys the film this weekend and enters the giveaways!

And there you have it! Can you now sense why this guy has been so successful with Hallmark over the past couple of years? While he initially took every one of my suggestions and incorporated them into his own unique style and outlook, I can no longer take credit for the impressive and prosperous industry professional he has become. He has forged his own way, and he continues to discipline himself to improve with each and every role sent his way. His co-stars invariably adore him(rightfully so). Moreover, while he may have the zaniest sense of humor at times, he also realizes there is a time to be sober. And at his core, he genuinely cares for each one of his fans and only wants to do his part to make this world a better place. As far as I’m concerned, with his commitment to supplying the world with whimsical entertainment, he is accomplishing this mission with pizazz while practically guaranteeing himself a place in the Hallmark universe as the years go by. He connects with his fans on an authentic level, and he perpetually has them in mind when it comes to these Hallmark movies. Kudos to Tyler’s mom for raising him the right way (in addition to all the school teachers and other adults who invested themselves in Tyler as he was growing up).

Please consider making it a point to tune in tonight (November 1st) to the Hallmark Channel for the premiere of On the 12th Date of Christmas. {My Canadian friends will have to wait till November 6th to watch this movie on the W Network.} In addition to this movie, be sure that you visit Tyler’s links below and enter all the giveaways he is hosting right now! If you have any questions about how to access those, simply ask away. Someone will be certain to direct you in the proper direction, but he planned to do a couple for Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. If you value fun, positivity, and a bit of wisdom now and then, there’s no doubt that you want to follow Tyler Hynes for all that and more. In truth, he is one whose friendship I shall always treasure, and hopefully, the new year will give us more opportunities to interact with him…and meet in person as well! Covid robbed us this year, but I am hopeful for 2021! My gratitude to Hallmark and Tyler is unending, and I couldn’t ask for a better Christmas gift than a new holiday flick with Tyler every year!! What say you, “Hynies” fans???
