Interview With Actor Tyler Hynes, “Flip That Romance”

Last fall, the Hallmark community was introduced to one of the most endearing, engaging actors who is everything you could ever want in a Hallmark leading man–devastatingly handsome, impeccably talented, and one of the kindest, most sensitive gents on the planet. Yes, I am talking about none other than Tyler Hynes, star of Falling For You and It’s Christmas, Eve. We Hallmarkies are being blessed today (March 16th) with yet another dose of this dashing, brilliant actor in the movie Flip That Romance, and I had the opportunity to chat with him in anticipation of this film’s premiere.

RH: So nice to chat with you again, Tyler,

TH: Same here, Ruth. How’s your weather out where you live?

It’s actually been a nice day today. But we’ve had an unusual amount of snow this winter out here in the Pacific Northwest.

Yeah, the weather has been crazy everywhere, it seems. It’s been raining a lot in LA. Snowstorms here in Toronto. I’m actually busy renovating my home right now. I shot a movie about flipping houses, and I’m actually flipping a house!

That’s great! And I was so excited to see that you were another Hallmark movie. And I was also very excited to see that you were on the Spring Fever Preview Show!

Yeah, I recently filmed that in LA.

Just about the time I wondered if they were going to have a preview show, I saw the announcement for it, and it aired this past weekend.

I am so glad everyone got to see that, and I can hardly wait for everyone to see this third Hallmark movie of mine.

Well, your two Hallmark movies last year were very well-received.

That’s good news. You mean the fans loved them?

With LeAnn Rimes

Definitely! In fact, the movie you did with LeAnn Rimes was a pleasant surprise. Before It’s Christmas, Eve aired, I read a lot of negative comments about LeAnn, and after it was aired and it was such a success, all that negativity practically went away.

That’s interesting. I just heard about that movie from the side of LeAnn, and she told me that the numbers of those who tuned in were very high. But that’s good news that people liked it.

Absolutely. And, of course, Falling For You with Taylor Cole was amazing as well.

Yeah, Taylor’s been pretty busy lately. She’s a good friend of mine. I think Hallmark might be seeing her a lot more in the future this year. Lots of things in the works, I hope, for her.

Now we have Flip That Romance coming up very soon for Hallmark.

Yes, and I have some special items that we’re giving away. I made sure to set those things aside. There’s an autographed script we’re giving away on Twitter and an autographed scene breakdown sheet with all my really terrible notes on them that we’re giving away in the Facebook group.

Tyler, that is fantastic! The fans just love the fact that you’re willing to do that. I know there was a lot of interest when you did that last time. The fans were so happy to get what you autographed for them in the mail.

Happy to do it for them!

So let’s talk about your movie. What can you tell us about Flip That Romance?

Well, do you know who Julie Gonzalo is?

I certainly do! A Hallmark favorite!

That’s great. I know she’s been in another couple of Hallmark movies. She’s a very sweet, talented, nice actress. We play an ex-couple. She is purchasing one half a duplex, and it just so happens I buy the other half, and she doesn’t realize it. Then we both end up competing in a sort of friendly competition. We’re competing to see who’s going to make the best flip. That snowballs into a big competition ’cause a local magazine catches wind of what we’re up to. They decide to involve the whole town in a voting-type scenario. Through all of that, the back and forth between me and Julie is funny. and a little bit cutting at times. I have some making up to do for having mistakenly left our relationship. Then we fall in love as they do in these movies. If you like shows that deal with the flipping of houses and those kinds of things, it’s a great movie for that. The production designers on this did a really good job of taking a property and showing it really evolve into something. So when you start watching it and hear us talk about what we’re trying to do, you end up wanting to stick around to see how it all turns out.

This was your first time to work with Julie, correct?

That’s right. It was the first time I’ve worked with Julie, and the first time I ever shot in Victoria. Such a beautiful place. Also, my first time working with our director, Mark {Jean}. Super nice and talented. And it was with Muse Entertainment, who does a lot of these. Joel Rice, the president of Muse, was very nice. And those were all the firsts. I also got to have a beard in it–some facial hair–which I was very excited about.

Hallmark’s come a long way as far as beards and facial hair goes. A couple of years ago, the leads almost always had to be clean-shaven. But I’ve noticed over the past year or so that beards are much more acceptable for the leading men in these movies. Which also means there are those fans who will complain about facial hair. Some ladies have definite ideas about beards and being clean-shaven. Personally, I don’t get caught up in that.

Well, hopefully, they like the facial hair because I would love to not have to shave for an entire month when doing these projects.

I can imagine. And I would venture to say that having facial hair or not makes it easier to get into a different kind of character. It’s not like we all say, “Oh, there’s Tyler again and he looks exactly the same as he did in the last movie.” Instead, we see you, and we realize you look different and you’re playing a different character.

Exactly! I would personally love to do more of that. I know the Hallmark brand has specific things that they want from their leading men, and I greatly respect and support that. But I would love to be able to push the envelope just a little bit so that every time we watch a movie that I’m in that we can get past the last movie and realize I’m playing a new, different character in a movie with a new look from a new place.

And, of course, we got to see you in the Spring Fever Preview Show last week. That was awesome. I don’t think you’d done anything like that before, right?

Yeah, it was definitely a first for me, but it was a lot of fun. I was surprised by how much fun I had. It was easy. You have a teleprompter, and you just read your lines. We had puppies that showed up on set. They were rescue puppies. I am basically finishing renovations on my place. My next thing is going to be to rescue a dog. Hallmark has this Adoption Ever After initiative. They got me connected with Larissa Wohl, and I think I’m going to be able to find a rescue dog very soon. I really do want to shine a light on this need, and I hope somehow to be able to help more animals get rescued in the process.

Larissa is awesome! We have to get you fully connected with her for more information. I’m sure she’d love to have you help get the word out there about rescue dogs. She’s on Home & Family daily featuring dogs and cats that need to be rescued. You are right in line with Hallmark’s initiative.

Well, I want to let Hallmark and Larissa and everyone there knows that I am literally trying to rescue a dog right now, and whatever I can do to help the cause and get the word out about rescuing dogs, I’m ready to promote this idea.

When you do rescue a dog, Tyler, be sure to reach out to Larissa and Hallmark and let them know. I bet they would feature your story on their show.

Good to know. I’ll be sure to do that. And by the way, I want to say I am so glad to be on this third movie with Hallmark. I really have grown to love this community.

And we all love having you here, Tyler. Now, I notice you are in a movie directed by my friend Jason Bourque.

Oh yes, Hotwired In Suburbia.

I have been following Jason’s works for years, and I was so excited to see that he was working with you. I know his last film, Counterfeiting In Suburbia, went straight to Netflix.

Oh, yeah, and this one is like the sequel to that one, and I think they plan to take the same path with this movie. We had a great time on this movie. Jason is a great guy.  But one of things I’m very proud of in this movie is that my character gets to vape. When me and Jason were shooting this, Jason wanted to do a slow-motion shot of me walking out of this shop, talking on my phone. So someone was vaping, and I grabbed their vape and said, “Jason, this is exactly what this guy needs to do through this entire movie!” I am vaping as much as possible. I haven’t seen a lot of vaping in movies. In fact, nobody seems to vape in movies. It’s super embarrassing and it’s quirky, but it fits with this cooky character.

You’re right, Tyler, I think they tend to go for the hard stuff, not the vaping.

I was so happy he let me do it. Jason’s a great guy, and I did some ADR for it a while back, and I was really happy to see how it turned out. I think it should be a fun little romp.

That’s great! Hopefully, some of my Hallmark friends will check it out. In fact, since this one is a sequel to Counterfeiting In Suburbia, I’m thinking this won’t be a super intense thriller.

Peace

Yeah, this one is fun, and it involves these two girls stealing these cars. I play their teacher, and I get them to do some work for me. Then it kinda goes sideways. It gets a little bit intense towards the end, but no one gets seriously hurt. It’s just a fun movie.

Good to know, Tyler. I don’t see a release date as of yet, but I’m sure Jason will keep up updated. And you will as you are able. So is there anything else coming up for you?

Yes, there’s a movie called Peace that I did. That’s a WWII movie that I shot in Kelowna, BC. I think it will be doing the festival rounds at some point. It’s a really good, realistic look at a small platoon during WWII that I am the captain of. I end up sending off a group of soldiers on a mission that sort of makes them question their morals. It should be a fun, good movie. I don’t know when that will be available for anyone to watch.

But as we said, Flip That Romance is the next one coming up for me! And I can hardly wait to share this with the group of people that we love so much! That Hallmark family!!

The feeling is mutual, Tyler. We fans just adore you and your movies.

I love working with the Hallmark family of actors. I’ve got Andrew Walker, who’s married to my cousin. Then I’ve got my buddy Marcus {Rosner} who is also loved in the Hallmark world. They’ve both given me pointers about how this Hallmark community works. And also Brennan Elliott, who is the Hallmark king from what I understand.

Credit: ©2019 Crown Media United States LLC/Photographer: Ryan Plummer

You know, there might be a few that would compete for that title, but I would say he is one of the Hallmark kings for sure. And he and Lacey Chabert together are one of the top on-screen Hallmark couples. I always call them the Hallmark Power Couple.

They’re all great guys, and I’m honored to be a part of the Hallmark community now.

Oh, and I notice there are some other great people in Flip That Romance too. Pauline Egan

Oh, yeah, Pauline is great. And be sure to watch for Shannon Chan-Kent, who plays Elsie. Her character is very funny.

That’s great! And I know Cardi Wong is in this too.

Yes, I worked with Cardi. He is a great character.

Well, I love the premise of the movie because it’s a little bit different, and I am so looking forward to seeing it!

Absolutely. And I bought a house and flipped it just for this movie! I was very committed to this role.

Well, it seems like they should make movies based on whatever is going on in your life, Tyler.

I’m all for that. Now we need to make a movie about me rescuing a dog!

I think Hallmark would be all for that, Tyler. Thank you again for sharing so much of yourself with the fans.

My pleasure, Ruth. I love interacting with my Hallmark family.

In the vast sea of Hallmark leading men, Tyler is one who distinguishes himself like no other. He is a true original with a heart of gold, and the fact that he continues to interact with the fans on such an authentic level is a testament to who he is as a person and as a professional. Whenever he and I chat (whether online or on the phone), he always makes me feel pretty special and takes an interest in everything I am doing. While I have that relationship with many of my friends in the business, Tyler is one who embraced me from the very beginning. He is such a breath of fresh air in a conglomerate of sometimes stuffy, once-in-a-while arrogant, all-too-often monotonous actors who believe the way to excel in this business is to be overbearing, discourteous, and egotistical. Those are three qualities that are the antithesis of who Tyler is inherently, and that is one of the many reasons I fully support everything he does (and ever will do) with Hallmark and elsewhere. He has a charming, unconventional sense of humor, and he knows how to make every person feel exceptional, regardless of who or what he/she are. He takes his job seriously when it is required, but when improvisation and banter are requisite, he can always be relied upon to deliver the perfect combination of both coupled with a sweet disposition that puts others’ needs before his own. In truth, while he may still be a youngster, he understands how to treat others with respect and consideration, qualities that some in his generation have chosen to disregard.

If you are able to tune into the Hallmark Channel tonight (3/16) for the premiere of Flip That Romance, I tend to think you will have a raucously enjoyable evening of laughter, love, and lore. (No showings are scheduled in Canada as of yet, unfortunately.). Additionally, I invite you to visit all of Tyler’s links below to continue this hilarious, pleasant journey with this young man who has definitely taken Hallmark by storm with his incredible giftedness and amusing personality. There is no doubt that he is quickly becoming Hallmark’s go-to actor for leading men who are outside-of-the-box. I can hardly wait to see all that is coming up for Tyler in the future (maybe put him in a movie with one of those other Hallmark favorites he mentioned), and as long as he continues to demonstrate his amiability with a side of humor and decency, there is no telling how many fans will sprint to his side and support him with every last bit of breath in their bodies!

I just stumbled into the Hallmark world of movies this week and of course Tyler Hynes is my new favorite. Very believable actor with maturity beyond his years. I can’t believe his back story. Where has he been all my life? Tyler could handle any number of characters. It will be interesting to see where he goes. Anyway I’m sending encouragement and positive energy. If he really wants it I know there is a place for him in the industry. The camera loves his face and that’s half the battle. Well, onward and upward for Tyler Hynes.
