Electricity is one of the backbones of modern civilization. It is something that many of us take for granted, you flick a switch and the lights come on.

The problem with this acceptance of electricity is that it is very easy to become complacent and forget just how dangerous electricity can be. There are many ways in which you or your loved ones can be hurt at home. The following steps will help to ensure you protect your loved ones from harm.

Regular Inspections

The first point to note is that your electrical system should be routinely checked by a qualified electrician. This will ensure that everything is safe and most potential issues will be spotted before they cause a problem.

Your local electrician will advise you on how regularly these inspections should be. You can click here to find out more.

Overloaded Plugs

With so many different appliances in your home, you will often find multiple items plugged into the same socket. This can be dangerous as it increases the chances of heat buildup and the potential for a fire to start.

Do not have anything plugged in unless it needs to be and if it is plugged in make sure the wire is uncoiled.

Wiring

Plugs being pulled in and out of sockets can lead to wires becoming loose. Equally the cable on any product can fray and expose the wire inside.

A visual inspection of your wires and plugs will help to spot any issues. If you do see one don’t use the appliance again until you have resolved it.

Plugs can be rewired to eliminate the frayed part and screws tighten to prevent wires being pulled out.

Water & Electricity

These two substances do not mix well together. No electrical socket should be close enough to the water that you can reach the tap while plugging something in. If the pug is too close either move it or have a professional do so for you.

Equally, you should never touch a socket with wet hands.

Exposed Sockets

Children are naturally very curious and will try to insert objects and even their fingers into sockets on the walls. The electric shock they would receive is likely to be fatal.

Protect your children by changing the sockets to extra safe ones or at least adding the socket covers. Your children won’t be able to access the plugs then.

Lights

Your overhead lights are usually safe but side lights and decorative ones can be left to close to flammable materials. Light bulbs emit a large amount of heat and can start a fire very quickly. Check the position of all your lights regularly.

Covered Wires

If your cables run under a blanket, carpet or even an item of soft furnishing they will not be able to release the heat which builds u in the cable. You might be surprised by how much heat a cable can generate. If the heat is unable to disperse it is possible that the cable will catch fire or set the surrounding objects on fire.

It is best not to have them covered.

With these simple precautions and a regular inspection, you should not have an issue with your electrical safety. But it is worth being vigilant.
