Many thanks to Angel Studios for providing a sample of the series for this review. All opinions are 100% my own.

When I first sat down to watch A Week Away: The Series, I’ll admit—I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’m in my fifties, and with no kids at home, a teen-centered series didn’t immediately feel like something made for me. But as soon as the music started and the first dance number lit up the screen, I found myself grinning ear to ear. By the end, I was singing along, tearing up at tender moments, and realizing this series offers far more than catchy songs and fun choreography.

Streaming now on Angel Studios, this family-friendly faith-based musical brings together infectious music, relatable struggles, and powerful messages about healing, hope, and belonging.

A Modern Faith-Based Musical: “Christian High School Musical” Meets Summer Camp

Think High School Musical or Camp Rock—but with a deeper message that stirs the heart. A Week Away: The Series is often described as “Disney Channel meets Bible camp,” and I couldn’t agree more. The songs are written and produced by the same creative minds behind your favorite Disney Channel hits, so you can expect high-quality music and energetic choreography.

But unlike typical teen musicals, this series has substance. At its core, it’s about a young man wrestling with grief, anger, and the ache of belonging. He learns—slowly and sometimes painfully—that healing can’t be forced. It must be chosen.

The Power of Music to Heal and Inspire

Music has a way of bypassing our defenses and speaking directly to the soul. That’s exactly what happens here. The songs are fun, funny, and yes—downright addictive. (Be prepared to have them stuck in your head for days.)

But it’s not all lighthearted. Some numbers cut deep, drawing out questions like: Can God really heal my pain? Can love be trusted? How do I reconcile faith with my past trauma? And let’s talk about that new take on Amazing Grace! If it doesn’t stir your soul, I might wonder whether you are breathing!

I found myself unexpectedly moved—laughing one minute, crying the next. That emotional rollercoaster is what makes A Week Away: The Series so special. It’s not just a show you watch. It’s one you feel.

Standout Performances & Surprising Charm

For me, one of the highlights was seeing Carlos PenaVega step into the role of campus pastor. His presence was magnetic, warm, and authentic—he truly elevated the series. The young cast is equally impressive, brimming with talent and heart.

Yes, there are moments that feel a little hokey or dated, but honestly? That’s part of the charm. It brought me back to the nostalgia of summer camp, where things don’t need to be perfect to be profoundly meaningful.

Why This Series Matters

A Week Away: The Series isn’t just entertainment. It’s a story that sheds light on real struggles teens (and adults) face: grief, doubt, purpose, and belonging. It’s a safe space for exploring faith without preaching or pressure.

At its heart, it reminds us:

  • Healing is a choice.

  • Redemption is possible.

  • Found family and unconditional love reflect God’s grace in the most tangible way.

Final Thoughts

As someone who didn’t think this series was “for me,” I was pleasantly surprised by just how much it resonated. Whether you’re a teen, a parent, or just someone who appreciates heartfelt storytelling with incredible music, I can’t recommend A Week Away: The Series enough.

It’s fun. It’s meaningful. And it just might remind you that hope, joy, and healing are closer than you think.
