5 Reasons Your Marriage Is Struggling

No couple is happy all the time, but if the bad days are starting to outnumber the good, you might need to sit down and seriously reevaluate your marriage. Here are just five common problems faced by spouses around the world.

1. You don’t communicate.

Open and honest communication is the only way that a long-term relationship can survive. If you stew in your feelings, or if you bottle them up and expect your partner to just “know” what’s bothering you, you’re turning yourself into a powder keg waiting to explode. Make an effort to talk about your feelings more, even if they’re unpleasant ones.

2. You have to be right.

Think back to the last argument you had with your spouse. Were you disagreeing over an actual, tangible issue, or were you hurling insults at each other because you wanted to make them hurt? Stick to the facts the next time you have a fight. Avoid the temptation to yell or name-call. Don’t let your need to feel superior ruin what could be a constructive disagreement.

3. You want separate things.

This doesn’t have to apply to big issues like children and housing. You may simply grow into different people as you get older, and your priorities might start drifting apart. Talk seriously with your partner and figure out which of your marriage goals do align.

4. You’ve been unfaithful.

This, of course, is a major mistake on your part, but it doesn’t necessarily have to mean the end of your marriage. You can always go into therapy together and build a plan to re-earn and re-establish trust. Counseling may also help you figure out why you strayed in the first place.

5. You don’t spend time together.

As the years pass, you stop going on dates. You stop surprising each other. Life becomes a series of the same old events unfolding in the same old ways, and the excitement and spontaneity of your courtship is gone. Try to recapture that feeling by spending more time together. Get out of the house and do something fun.

These are just five reasons why your marriage might be in trouble. If your differences are truly too great to reconcile, check out places like Cordell & Cordell’s Facebook page. They’ll help you handle a divorce as painlessly as possible.
