My rating: 3 of 5 stars
First of all, let me explain something–fantasies are a relatively new genre to me.  Sometimes I find a fantasy that really resonates with me, and there are other times that I struggle to connect with the story and the characters.  The more fantasy I read, the more willing I am to accept these kinds of stories.

Serena Clarke has given us a clean, sweet romance with no sex scenes, no profanity, and good morals.  Violence is very minimally described, and nothing too terrible or scary occurs.  All of these elements work together to make this an unusual fantasy–quite often, all those negative elements are included.  This story is a breath of fresh air that can certainly has the potential to be enjoyed by incurable romantics of any age.

I’m going to be honest with you.  I absolutely loved Elani.  In fact, she made this story what it is.  My problem was with Prince Garin.  I couldn’t stand him from the beginning, and I wish with all my heart that Elani had sought the affection of someone else.  She was too good for him.  I watched for something that changed in him or might cause me to like him, but it never appeared.  Even at the end.  The ending was quite predictable, and I could have done with a few more plot twists, but again, this is just my opinion.

I have to say that the mood and premise of the story were really good, but I merely struggled to connect with the story and characters in the way I generally do.  I am pleased that this a squeaky clean novel, but I would have preferred a little more meat and less fluff.  But if you are looking for a light, sweet, romantic fantasy, this is definitely the book for you!

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.  I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
