This looks like a great movie.
As we face today’s challenges, the need for stories that uplift and inspire has never been more important. “White Bird,” in theaters on October 4th, is one such film. From the best-selling author of Wonder, which sparked a global movement to “choose kind,” comes this next chapter—a deeply moving coming-of-age story that highlights the transformative power of kindness, faith, and love.
From the world of Wonder, which introduced the global “choose kind” movement, comes White Bird, a poignant continuation that focuses on Julian (played by Bryce Gheisar), a boy struggling to fit in after being expelled from his previous school. Julian’s life takes a transformative turn when his grandmother (Helen Mirren) shares her story of surviving Nazi-occupied France during WWII. Through her courageous journey, Julian learns about the power of kindness and the bravery it takes to do the right thing, even in the most difficult circumstances.
This film couldn’t be more timely. In a world where division and hatred are on the rise, White Bird offers a much-needed message of hope, compassion, and faith. The anti-semitism we see today makes this story especially poignant, highlighting the importance of standing up against injustice.
As a massive fan of historical fiction, especially WWII stories, I found White Bird to be emotionally gripping and thought-provoking. The narrative is chilling in its portrayal of historical events, but it also has moments of brightness that remind us of the resilience of the human spirit. The acting is stellar, with Helen Mirren delivering a powerful performance, and the visuals are stunning, bringing both the beauty and the terror of the time to life.
While it’s not suitable for very young children due to its heavy themes, White Bird avoids gratuitous violence. The film maintains a level of realism that makes the story impactful without being overly graphic. It’s a movie that will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions and leave you reflecting on the importance of kindness and bravery long after the credits roll.
Also, there may have been one “swear” word, but it made sense and did not bother me. I barely heard it, to be honest.
