The first day of summer is less than a couple of weeks away. Many people are still busy with spring cleaning, but they haven’t even taken a look at their home. One of the parts of the house that you may need to look at is your roof. It may have collected some debris and endured some damage during the cold winter and rainy spring. It is always a good idea to address those problems in a timely manner.
There are a number of different things that you will want to do to take care of your roof in the summer. Here are some good ways to start.
Clean Your Gutters Thoroughly
You can run into all kinds of problems if your gutters are clogged. If water gets backed up, then it can start to cause rot damage to the wood. You can also attract birds, insects, squirrels and all kinds of other vermin. You will want to clean any gunk that has accumulated over the last few months.
Inspect Vents and Fans Carefully
You will also want to check all the vents and fans that are attached to your roof. Precipitation and cold temperatures may have caused some minor damage to them. You will definitely want to have them fixed or tuned up before the first summer heat wave strikes.
Look for Signs of Mold and Mildew
Mold and mildew can cause discoloration and weaken the structure of your roof. It is a good idea to remove any that you find. You can use a special mixture such as Mold Shock, but you can just as easily make your own solution. All you need is some hot water and bleach to kill most types of mold.
Inspect the Flashing Near All Ports
The metal strips along your chimney, vents, skylights and satellite dishes play a key role in preventing drafts. You will want to inspect it every summer, because harsh weather can cause it to erode. Changes in temperature can often cause it to loosen, since it will expand and contract.
Take Pictures
It is always a good idea to take pictures of your roof every time that you inspect it. This allows you to see how it has changed over time. You may notice some slight cracks that started to arise since the last inspection, so it is a good idea to take care of them right away. You might even want to call in an expert that can offer a free roofing inspection and recommend any repairs that may be needed. An ounce of prevention is always worth a pound (or more) of cure.

I can see how backed water can cause rot and damage wood. It makes sense to clean your gutters then. Water running into your foundation from your roof can even cause structural damage in your foundation.

I reside in a part of the city where at least 50% of houses have this problem. It is very hard to get rid of this problem. Dirty walls, lots of moisture really make it worse in my case. I will definitely try this to remove the molds.

Spray the Roof!!! Take a garden hose and go up to the roof and start spraying in different locations to find the leak. Wait if it’s wintertime because it’s not safe to run water on the roof when it’s freezing out.
