It was on this date in 1839 that a hurricane moved from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina to offshore New England. This was a very unusual hurricane in that it produced snow in the Catskill Mountains of New York. For those who love the Beatles (I like some of their stuff, honestly), today is a special day. On this date in 1966, the Beatles performed their final official concert together. It was in Candlestick Park in San Francisco, and they knew this was it. Interestingly enough, it is this historic park that will be demolished next year. You might […]

Since I am a member of Hallmark Crown Media press, this is a perfect time to highlight one of my favorite stars.  Yes, on this date in 1974 (the same year I was born), Kristin Booth was born.  If you follow me on twitter, you will know that she stars in my all-time favorite show Signed, Sealed, Delivered along with […]

This is commonplace for baseball now.  If we didn’t have artificial light, baseball season would be less inviting.  (What am I talking about?  I’m not a baseball fan!  I know, but there are many who are!)  It was on this date in 1910 that the Logan Squares and Rogers Park played the baseball’s  first successful night game under artificial lights […]

If you have a little one going to school, you may be very thankful that today’s feature happened.  On this date in 1873, the school board of St. Louis, Missouri, authorized the first public kindergarten.  It was opened by educational pioneer, Susan Blow. I hope that they never do away with free public kindergarten because in my opinion, it is […]

It was not easy to research the exact date of today’s feature, and hopefully I am accurate.  If you wish to read about our featured countess, there is a load of information out there, however.  On this date in 1425, disguised as a man, Countess (or Duchess) Jacoba (or Jacqueline) of Bavaria escaped prison.  You might find it interesting to […]

Today’s feature truly sickened me.  On this date in 1349, about six thousand Jews were killed in the German city of Mainz.  This was at the height of the bubonic plague, and Jews were often blamed as the ones who brought this horrible disease to Europe.  On more than one occasion, Jews became the scapegoat.  I had no idea that […]

It was on this date in 1912, that one of the greatest dancers of all-time (possibly the best tap dancer to have lived) was born–Gene Kelly.  I first discovered his great talent when I happened to pick up the film Singin’ in the Rain from our local library back when I was a preteen.  I was instantly smitten with his […]

It was on this date in 1858, that the theory of evolution by natural selection was first published.  Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace published their theory in the Journal of the Proceedings of the Linnean Society.  While I do not personally subscribe to this theory (as I am sure you can imagine based on the nature of this blog), […]

Okay, I’m not a Twilight fan.  I don’t plan to read the book, watch the movie, or anything like that.  I first heard Christina Perri’s song  “A Thousand Years” on the radio, and I did not know the origin.  I still like the song.  On this date in 1986, Christina Perri was born.  Her first single “Jar of Hearts” was […]
