So, do your elementary children struggle with math? Math has changed so much since I studied it way back when. Sometimes I am completely floored when my daughter brings me her math homework. I was a good Algebra student, and sometimes I am stumped at her fifth grade math work.
Splash Math on web has more comprehensive content than its app counterparts. Instead of a single grade, a child can now access to practice content for all Grades 1 to 5. This benefits all learners – the child who has completed his/her grade level, can now go beyond and practice the next grade level; and the child who needs to review the previous grade skills can go back and strengthen them. Splash Math adapts to the child’s level and ensures mastery of all grade level math skills.
Key Features :
1. Online practice content for Grades 1 to 5
2. Interactive questions aligned to Common Core State Standards
3. Access from PCs and Macs
4. Insightful performance reports in graphical dashboard. Know the trouble spots and strengths of children while they practice
5. Adaptive learning customizes content to the child’s strengths and weaknesses
6. Fun rewards keep children motivated and engaged in practice
So what did I think? I believe this program is exactly what my daughter needs. Let me say that my daughter has not really had much exposure to this yet. She has been sick, and I have even been sick. She is an excellent math student, but getting her to practice on educational website is not always so easy. It can be a struggle. But it is one that I am getting ready to engage in. During Thanksgiving, I plan to spring this site on her. If things go well, I might even do it this weekend since we are finally over our illnesses.
This doesn’t mean I can’t adequately review it, however. I have played with the site as though I were my daughter, and I have been impressed. Normally sites that claim to go through fifth grade fall short. They spend more time on the early skills, and my daughter gets bored easily. I can guarantee that my daughter will love this site because it will challenge her. She is getting to a point in math where she really needs some extra work with problem-solving. I was very happy to see that the skills that are covered are right on grade level, and my daughter could keep going through the school year. The graphics are amazing, and I believe she will think she is playing a game (rather than reviewing math concepts).
From an educator’s point of view, this program is truly a stroke of genius. It is in those elementary years when students often lose interest and end up with gaps in their learning. With math, this is detrimental. Math closely builds upon past concepts, and holes in learning cause the student not to succeed. I can’t tell you how many times I have worked with middle school and high school students who don’t even have the basics down. And if they don’t have the basics, it is a hopeless cause until they get caught up. Math Splash can ensure that the holes are filled during the formative years.
In addition to the website, this is also available as an app and on facebook and twitter.
