What I really liked about Shudder was the continuity of the characters – they held the same realistic, admirable qualities that they had in the first book, and Alessa continued to struggle to decide between what is right for the greater good, and what is right for the people she loves the most. This is what I like most about her as a character – it makes her realistic and I felt emotionally connected to her in the difficulties she faced.

Why? She’s young and fresh, and she’s got Alessa’s long brown hair, height, and down-to-earth “real girl” sensibility. The only thing Emmy doesn’t have are Alessa’s striking green eyes – but that’s what color contacts and Photoshop are for, right?

I’m anxious to read Struck, which is the conclusion to the trilogy, and I predict a lot of action as well as more secrets to be uncovered! I can’t wait to see what happens to our characters, Isaac and Alessa.

I also loved the chapters where we get to know Nikhil better. In Stitch he was a minor character who only appeared towards the end, but in Shudder he has a more important role. I liked that I got to see the prison through his eyes, and learn more about the dramas, and how he had been “stitched” many times for different shows.
So Alessa struggles with the responsibilities that are laid out before her. She never asked to be a hero. But as Isaac reassures her in her moment of crisis, “Sometimes we don’t get to choose our path. Sometimes we just have to do something because we’re the only ones who can.” And Alessa can do it. She just needs to muster up the courage to try.

I’m a huge fan of multiple perspectives. I know a lot of people tend to find it disorganized or confusing when reading, but trust me, Samantha Durante pulls it off in a way that I’m sure every reader can appreciate.

I must express my love for the relationship between our Alessa and Isaac. Their connection is palpable but everything is not perfect and the uncertainties that plague them feel real and warranted. They are wonderfully fleshed out characters I can’t help but root for.

My favorite quote from Shudder is, “The ones we love most never really leave us, do they? They just hole up deep inside us, where we couldn’t get rid of them even if we tried.” Isaac says this about his brother, and I think it’s a really hopeful way to look at the tragedy of loss.
