Reese’s Cowboy Kiss

(Sweet Montana Bride #1)
by Kimberly Krey

Adult Romance

Paperback, 307 Pages

May 13th 2014 by Candle House Publishing

Texan pageant winner, Reese Taylor, has a former classmate who wants her dead. Now she must leave her friends and family to enter a protection program on Emerson Ranch. A group of good-looking cowboys awaits her, but Reese has her eye on Blake Emerson, the one man too busy with the ranch to give her a chance.

Blake Emerson has no time to go lookin’ for love. He’s got a ranch to run, positions to fill, and an ache in his heart from love gone wrong. So when he agrees to harbor a witness to help on the ranch, Blake assumes his first two problems are solved. But he never dreamed his new guest would be a woman. One he was destined to lose his heart to.

With sparks burning hot and danger around the bend, one question lingers in his mind: Has he only added to his list of troubles, or has Blake just found the woman of his dreams?

*While this book is considered clean romance, it contains passionate kissing and a few mild curse words.*
Reese’s Cowboy Kiss by Kimberly Krey

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Romances are something that I typically enjoy, but all too often, they are forgettable. I can honestly say that my favorite romance, “Sierra” by Taylor Dean, is one that resonated with me, and since that time, no other book has gotten close to the euphoria I felt as I read that book. Until now. This book is everything I love–clean romance, mystery, comedy–all rolled into one. And I can honestly say that this book is just a notch below my favorite.

When I call this a clean romance, I mean that the profanity is nothing to speak of–extremely mild. And there are no bedroom scenes. In fact, those Reese and Blake refuse to be intimate while not married. Very rare in today’s culture. While I wouldn’t necessarily classify this book as Christian, there are several references to God and prayer.

The romance described within this book is some of the most swoon-worthy I have ever read. All too often, I had to set the book down and just recover my breath! Can a guy as wonderful as Blake exist? Well, he does in the pages of this tale! And although this follows the typical romance formula, the author does add a bit of spiciness here and there. If you enjoy romances, this book is for you!

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

I figured since strawberry shortcake has three layers – the cake, the strawberries, and the cream – we’d layer this post the same way. We’ll start with an excerpt, add our delicious cake recipe, and top it all off with a final excerpt from the same scene. Now, as Reese would say, ya’ll enjoy. Oh, and don’t forget to enter the giveaway; a $100 gift card could earn you quite a treat indeed.

Layer 1 –Reese is on the spot:Gathered ‘round the family table, the Emersons welcome Reese to the ranch. While Betty, the lady of the house, prepares the dessert, the others play a game where they draw printed questions and answer them aloud. Most of the rowdy ranch hands have answered a question of their own; in this excerpt, it’s Reese’s turn. To her dismay, the question brings on thoughts of Blake, the handsome cowboy who’s agreed to harbor her in her time of need.

Reese reached into the jar and pulled out one of the small slips. “If you could stay up all night long, what would you most like to do?” She paused after reading it, catching the words that threatened to spill from her lips. Something about the fact that she nearly had stayed up the entire night before. But that would no doubt lead to questions she couldn’t answer – stuff about the shooting and all.

Hmm, if she could stay up all night what would she… suddenly Blake’s words came to her – ‘like a good kiss’ – he’d said. Heaven on her tongue. Her eyes shot to his corner of the table as she considered what a night spent kissing Blake would be like. He returned her gaze, a smoldering heat flaring behind his deep, brown eyes. She licked her lips, searching for something to say, but before she could speak the guys broke out in hoots and hollers.

“Think she’s looking at you there, brother,” Shane said.

“That’s just cuz she doesn’t want him getting all angry when she says she’d like to spend the night in my company,” Rowdy said.

“You mean mine,” Stockton interrupted.

A shrieking whistle blasted through the room. The space went silent as all eyes shifted to Betty at the counter.

“Hush up, boys, so the girl can answer the question.”

Layer 2 –The Recipe:

Homemade Sheet Cake

~ Betty Emerson from The Sweet Montana Bride Series ~

2 ½ C flour

2 ½ teaspoon baking powder

1 ½ teaspoon salt

2/3rd C butter

1 3/4th C sugar

1 ½ teaspoon vanilla

2 eggs

1 1/4th C milk

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in small bowl.

In large bowl, beat butter, sugar, and vanilla. Add eggs one at a time. Then alternate adding milk and dry ingredients while stirring constantly.

Grease and flour a large cookie sheet and pour on evenly. Heat at 375 for 20-25 min. This cake is best served with strawberries and whipped cream. (Can be cooked in 9×13 cake pan as well. Will need closer to 30-35 min for this size.)

Layer 3 –A Quick Toast: Each of the Emersons raise their glass for a toast by Grant, the man of the house. Blake had gotten rather quiet only moments ago, but here, he decides to put a bit more color into Reese’s cheeks by repeating a phrase he’d referred to earlier – one that he said describes a good kiss.

Grant looked at Reese, a smile on his face. “Thanks for coming on out and being a part of the gang.”

“Here, here,” Rowdy bellowed.

The glasses clinked as Stockton tipped his head back and howled.

“Thank you,” Reese said, “for making me feel so welcome. Ya’ll are some of the kindest folks I’ve ever met.” She took a sip of her drink and lowered herself onto the chair, anxious to try the dessert.

The tangy strawberries, mixed with the soft, sweet cream tasted better than she imagined. Reese moaned in approval with her first bite. “Betty,” she said, “this is delectable.”

“I’m glad you like it,” the kind woman said. “It’s Blake’s favorite.”

A slight dimple showed in Blake’s cheek as Reese eyed him. “Tastes like heaven on my tongue,” he said, giving her a wink.

She smiled, glad the playful side of him had made a second appearance. Reese may not know what it was that seemed to throw Blake Emerson into bouts of somber reflection, but as she looked at him in that moment – the mischievous spark brewing in his eyes – Reese prayed she would have the chance to find out.
