Pajama Party: The Story
By E. C. Jackson
YA Christian Contemporary
Paperback & ebook, 213 Pages
August 26th 2017 by E. C. Jackson

Most sleepovers are simple. Food, fun, and pillow fights. But sixteen-year-old Karen Duncan has bigger plans for her slumber party. Family troubles have changed her over the past year, and she’s no longer the petty, selfish girl she used to be. Now she’s ready to shake things up with her friends. The guest list comes as a surprise to some and a slap in the face to others. This popular girl has invited some not-so-popular guests. Even more shocking, she’s left out some of the girls she’s hung out with since middle school.

Diane and Evette are outsiders, nervous about being stuck in a house with the same girls who tease them at school. Kathy, Lisa, and Joann come to the party with the confidence of the in-crowd, but they’re masking inner-turmoil that is bound to surface. Sandy and Angela are usually the voices of reason…usually. And then there’s Linda, the friend that got away. She may not ever forgive the girls who abandoned her years ago. Karen hopes to change her mind.

Her agenda is ambitious, and it could spell disaster. But Karen is convinced God will use this party to spark a new beginning for everyone involved. This companion book to A Living Hope gives us the inspired story Sadie Cummings wrote for the girls of Shiatown.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

My Overall Rating: 3.5 stars

First of all, this is a Christian book in every sense of that word with nothing inappropriate included. Real issues are discussed and dealt with, but all is done within the context of the Bible and a Christian worldview. For that fact alone, I am eternally grateful.

Secondly, this is a book that would definitely appeal to teenage girls, especially those from around 13-16. While I am not that age, I consistently put myself in my daughter’s shoes (she is almost 16), and I considered what she might think of this particular book and how she would rate it.

This is the first book I ever read from this particular author, and there is no doubt that she put her heart and soul into these particular characters. It was refreshing to witness young girls getting together and discussing relevant topics. While discord and anger popped up quite often and things got heated at times, a wide variety of topics such as abstinence, dating, and even appropriate entertainment were discussed at length amongst these girls. I believe that a teenage girl could read this book and go to her mother or a trusted friend and discuss some of these topics that are vital to the spiritual lives of these young women.

The only reason I did not score the book any higher is that I felt as though the writing of the book was not on a high enough level. I understand that this was originally a script, and sometimes script adaptations to other forms do not read as smoothly or as well as they do when in their original form and vice versa. I felt the writing was a bit choppy at times and not nearly as descriptive as I would have liked it to be. But then again, those are personal preferences of mine, and the most important thing about the book is its message which came across quite clearly.

For three and a half years she published the Confidence in Life newsletter for Alpha Production Ministries, in addition to writing tracts and devotionals. Her mission: spiritual maturity in the body of Christ through fiction.

A note from E. C. Jackson: “The Write Way: A Real Slice of Life” is the slogan on my website and Facebook author page. If every person reading my book feels connected to the characters, my job is done.
