Interview With Actress Pascale Hutton, “When Calls the Heart” & “You Had Me At Aloha”

Anyone who has followed my interviews for a while now is well aware of the affinity I have for the When Calls the Heart cast and crew. I have always taken a distinctive interest in everyone connected with the show, and it has invariably been my desire to do all I could to promote the work of these fine industry professionals in this show and beyond. Before the gripping finale of season eight, I had the marvelous opportunity of chatting with the delightful Pascale Hutton about season eight and her upcoming movie, You Had Me At Aloha. I can recall how the pandemic changed things last year in regards to that film, and it is my honor and joy to present our engaging interview in anticipation of tonight’s movie premiere!

RH: Pascale, it is so great to chat with you today. How are things going?

PH: You know, life is good. I was in Hawaii, shooting the movie with Kavan {Smith} for the month of March. Then when I got back…when anybody comes to Canada, whether you’re a citizen or not, then you have to quarantine for two weeks. Yeah, so I’m just freshly out of my quarantine. Monday was my first day out in the world again. It’s so beautiful here in Vancouver. It’s sunny and the blossoms have burst open and there’s blue skies, so life is good. It feels great.

Crazy times we’re living in.

I know, right. But it feels like the new normal for us now.

I’m glad you guys got to make your movie because I remember last year when I talked with you, everything in the world had come to a screeching halt. Everything was put on hold and nobody knew what was happening. I remember I had talked with Kavan like two or three weeks before I talked with you, and he was like, “Oh yeah, we’re gonna go make this movie in Hawaii.” And then all that changed. I remember–it was so crazy–because I talked with him before we knew anything was happening, and he was like, “Well, unless some major thing happens and everything shuts down, we’re going to make this movie.” I told him later, “You realize you said this?” It was crazy!

Last year, it really was so close. Our director and producer live in mainland USA, and they were days away from flying out to start prep. It was that close when everything shut down. And so it really was crazy. And then, of course, we got into filming When Calls the Heart, and so even when things opened up, Kavan and I were no longer available. So that’s why it got pushed all the way until March 2021.

I totally get it. Last year at this time, I was a substitute teacher, and we believed we were only going to be out for six weeks, and it’s actually just now that schools here are starting to open back up.

We just didn’t know. How naive we all were.

And now that I work for Paul Greene, and I’m not going to go back into the classroom. That was unexpected, but I’m very happy about how things worked out. I really enjoy what I’m doing now.

Congratulations on the job, Ruth. But I know a lot of teachers are feeling like their job description now as it is, and for the foreseeable future, is not really what they signed up for when they signed up to become teachers. They did all their training, and I can see how it feels like a good time to explore other avenues.

So how are your kids doing? How have your kids been coping during this time? I know I talked with you last year when things had just shut down and you had them at home.

School was shut down here until the end of May, and then in June of last year, they reopened the schools. Optionally, you could send your kids to in-class instruction with your teacher two days a week if you wanted to. And I just thought, “No, I don’t need to. I’m home.” I knew they really wanted to reduce numbers, and so I just thought, “You know, I’m at home.” The kids are doing well. I’m doing well with homeschooling them. I figured we were doing fine, and I’d leave those spots available for parents who really need them. So they stayed home until the end of June and then had a normal summer. July and August were as normal as it’s gonna get during a pandemic.

Then in September, schools reopened here full-time for kids grade seven and under. Obviously, my kids are in that bracket, and so they’ve just been in school as normal from September. They have to wear masks and then they have a cohort, so they have scheduling where, my two kids, because they’re in different grades, they start school at different times and they finish school at separate times. They have different lunches and recesses. And the playground is divided into sections and you’re only allowed to play in one certain section. Then during lunch and recess the next week, you rotate to another section so they keep the kids in their one cohort class together so that there’s not cross-contamination, for lack of a better word.

So, knock on wood, it’s worked out so far, and this year has been running very, very smoothly. There’s been no exposures in either of the boys’ classes, and they’ve just continued with their regular schooling. My older son plays soccer, and soccer has continued although with new parameters. Like they can play games, but they do skills and drills and they do little scrimmages within their own team. And so he’s been able to stay doing that. So life, for them, has been…I mean, I won’t say normal, but pretty close to normal.

So they’re doing fine; they’re doing great and they’re happy little guys. I know they’re at a younger stage. I know it can be tough to be older and at a stage in life where they’re supposed to be kind of spreading their wings and branching further away. And, you know, with all the restrictions on, it can be hard keeping your bubble small. I think that’s really been hard on teenagers. But for little guys like mine, they still love hanging out at home with me and with my husband, so they’re good. They’ve been having a good time.

Well, that’s good to hear. Actually, I’m glad you explained all that because I haven’t really talked with anyone about what’s going on up in Canada, up in Vancouver, with kids. It’s good to hear that report. I know things have been better in Vancouver. I try to follow what I can. COVID seems a little more controlled up in Vancouver maybe than it is elsewhere.

Yeah, definitely. They put a lot of energy into contact tracing. I guess they found out that the contact tracing is not tracing back to school; that’s not where the bulk of transmission is happening. The bulk of transmissions are happening in settings that are not regulated. For example, like in the home. People are not social distancing in the home and yet you’ve got parents who are now, some of them, working out of the house.

Our Health Officer and Minister of Health for the province, they’ve just made keeping schools open a huge priority for kids, and especially for kids’ mental health. I think for a lot of kids having that connection with their friends and having that connection with school is really important. So that’s been a top priority and they haven’t really wavered on that. They’ll put in new regulations in terms of making sure the kids are wearing masks. But they aren’t shutting down. So far, I mean. I don’t know if it’s always the case for every city or every state or province, but it has been working here.

That’s good to hear. And the good news here is schools are starting to open back up here. We’re slowly making progress, and I’m happy about that.

Well, that’s the name of the game. The whole thing has been very slow. And that’s fine with me.

That’s right, exactly. But I was so glad when it was announced that you guys were coming back for When Calls the Heart because I know that had to be a little difficult waiting to hear if you were going back and maybe when.

Yeah, I always felt quite confident that we were going to come back. We were in a very good position in terms of when the world shut down. That was our natural hiatus for When Calls the Heart and so we were kind of unaffected in that sense. I was always very confident that by July, which is when we were scheduled to go back, that thing would be safe enough for us to resume and start filming season eight.

But I’d say the nerve-wracking part for most people was once we were going back, how was it going to work? What was the new landscape going to be to ensure everyone in front of and behind the camera was safe? What were the new protocols? And would the new protocols even work? Because it was uncharted territory. Everybody had the best intentions, but as we’ve seen, sometimes the best intentions, when they’re put into practice, aren’t actually very practical and you have to modify. And so we were one of the very first shows to get back up and running. That was in July and we were setting the landscape and seeing if it worked. And fortunately, it did; it worked. We were able to film our entire season–July until the end of November–without any incident. And that was really fortunate.

I definitely watched what was going on because you know how much I love all of you guys in the show. I was very much invested in the show. I was happy to see John Tinker come on as your showrunner. I’ve been following him since his Chesapeake Shores days.

There was something very special about season eight. I know it can be challenging to get to everybody’s storyline in a big cast like When Calls the Heart, but I have felt like this has been the best season where everybody has gotten some really good storylines out there and I don’t feel like anybody’s getting passed over.

That’s wonderful feedback to hear, especially from you, Ruth, since you’ve been such a fan and supporter of the show since day one. So that’s wonderful to hear.

It’s been really exciting to see. I’ve been saying that I didn’t even want to look away. I’ll look down to tweet something out, and then I realize, “Oh no, what did I just miss?” I realized I just missed something really important and I gotta run it back! I feel like the show really found its rhythm this season. And, of course, I always love Lee and Rosemary. I would say you two are still my favorite couple in the show, though Clara and Jesse also had an interesting run as well.

Yeah, they’ve had a bit of a bumpy road through being newlyweds.

I told my mom I was really glad to see this storyline because we don’t always see that, especially in Hallmark. You don’t see this side of married life all too often.

Yes, they did make some questionable choices and then had to deal with the repercussions of those decisions.

Well, and then Rosemary. My goodness, she came to a crossroads. Like, what is she going to do next? First of all, the dress shop’s going to close, and then the dress shop’s not going to be sold. And she’s trying to figure out what she’s going to do for the next part of her life. I mean, we all know Rosemary is not the kind of person who could just…even should she have a family, which we of course all hope for in the future for Lee and Rosemary…but she’s not going to be the kind of character that can just stay at home and be a homemaker and mother.

I think Rosemary has always had a lot of talents, a lot of skills, and she certainly isn’t short on ambition. So it didn’t surprise me when we got to this point now in season eight where she was a bit restless. And I think also, I’ve seen this with couples who are dealing with infertility. I think for a lot of couples, you just assume that children are going to kind of be a dominant force in your life. And when, as Rosemary and Lee, you are facing that that may not be the case for their future and for their life as a married couple, you go, “Okay, so what does define my life now? If this major piece of the puzzle is now taken out, what is defining my life?” I think that’s where you saw Rosemary and Lee this season, starting to think about a bigger picture and think about what is the meaning of their life and what direction, what focus are they having in their life going forward? And this season, I think, is all about that journey. It’s not coming to either of them in a grand epiphany. Wouldn’t that be so nice and so simple if that’s how it was? I think what you saw in both of them, but particularly in Rosemary, was that struggle in that journey where she tries to figure it out.

Yeah, exactly. Well, and, and then, of course, Lee and Rosemary had a teenager kind of dropped in their lap for a while that they’ve been taken care of with Lee’s niece coming. That was quite a little storyline until she went back to Bellingham, a place I’m familiar with since I live in Washington State. I loved that storyline. I loved that they got the opportunity to be a caretaker for this young woman and try to steer her in the right direction.

I think it’s a real testament to how Rosemary and Lee approach life, which is, they’ve got a lot of love to give and they just dive in. Rosemary, probably more so than Lee. I think he tries to think things over and weigh all the pros and cons a little bit more thoroughly than Rosemary. But Rosemary, I mean, like it or not, she’s going to dive in; whatever project presents itself to her, she dives in headfirst. And so with Rachel, it was no different. I mean we saw that in the scene where Susanna asked her and Lee to foster Rachel, and without hesitation, Rosemary, says, “Yes, absolutely. Of course, we’ll take her in. Of course, Rachel can live with us.” And so, yeah, it just feels like a very natural step I think for Rosemary in particular to just dive into that.

But now with Rachel, she went back home. And now the dress shop is not going to be sold. And yet, I don’t know if Rosemary is too happy about that. She seemed a little bit unsettled.

It’s always so much easier when you’re forced into a situation because it takes the onus off you. You no longer have to make the decision yourself because the decision has been made for you. So it was going to be so much easier for Rosemary if the dress shop is sold and she has to choose a new career. Now the dress shop’s still open. So if she’s going to venture out on a new path, she has to really own that vision for herself and I think that’s where Rosemary was for those couple of episodes. She really committed to leaving the dress shop behind and forging a new path for herself and she really had to own that decision.

Yeah, that’s a good point, Pascale. What I also love this season is the way that Rosemary is not judging Elizabeth and not pushing her in one direction. She is being this fantastic friend, as Elizabeth is trying to decide, “Who do I really want to go after? Is it gonna be Lucas or is it gonna be Nathan?” I love the fact that Rosemary’s not pushing her or judging her. She’s that kind of friend that I think every woman would want to have if they’re trying to make a decision, “Who do I really love? Who do I want to be in a relationship with?”

I think that’s Rosemary in a nutshell in this particular situation right from the get-go. Rosemary has always been “Team Elizabeth.” She actually doesn’t care who Elizabeth picks. She doesn’t have any feelings or opinions about Lucas or Nathan. She only has Elizabeth’s best interests at heart, and she only cares about Elizabeth’s happiness and whatever path Elizabeth feels is the right one to achieve that happiness. Rosemary is going to support her, and that’s been unwavering.

Yeah, it’s really nice to see that. Should I ever be in that position where I’m trying to decide which guy I want to date, I want a “Rosemary” in my life. Well, I mean, I’ll take a “Rosemary” in my life even if I’m not dating the guy. That’s fine. Rosemary has been a really good friend to Elizabeth, and I know I’ve said this before, but I have loved seeing the way Rosemary has evolved over the seasons.

Sometimes it’s hard to believe that she was ever the Rosemary we saw in season one. And to see where she is now at the end of season eight, it’s like “Wow!” It’s been amazing to see her journey, and the way the writers have taken her character.

But I really do think that it’s a testament to you as well, Pascale, because you have been able to take her character and the viewers on this journey. It’s one thing to have writing and good direction, and I’m not negating that. But I still say that it does take an actor who can interpret the role and really bring it to the audience. And I think you’ve done an exceptional job with that. I really do.

Well, thank you, thank you. You know, I think it comes from never wanting to pin down Rosemary and peg her as just one thing. I’ve always wanted her to be a complex and complicated character, and I’ve wanted her to evolve. And fortunately, the writers have felt the same way, and the directors have felt the same way. So the material has been there to support that. And so we’ve all been kind of on the same path; we’ve all been of the same mind.

Right, exactly. And it was so nice we’ve had twelve episodes this season. I know we didn’t have the Christmas movie, but still, it’s nice that they at least gave us the extra episodes since we didn’t get the Christmas movie that we normally do.

It has been nice to have two extra episodes to tell kind of more long-form storytelling season than we’ve seen before. You know, conflicts and problems are not easily resolved within one or two episodes. We were able to see them kind of stretch out, and I think that came from having more episodes to play around with.

I agree with you on that. So, without giving away anything of course in case some have not seen the full season…I know people are still reeling from what happened in the last few episodes of the season. But what would you say about the end of the season for Rosemary? There was a wedding that happened.

Yes, there was a wedding. Everybody loves a Hope Valley wedding, so that’s exciting, right? I will say that I think a lot of a lot of storylines and conflicts that were percolating throughout this season resolved themselves by the season finale. A lot. So for those who haven’t seen it yet, I will say that there is going to be resolution on a lot of those issues in episode twelve. As many already know.

That’s good to hear. And with the wedding, of course, Rosemary had a big part in helping plan that. Rosemary can’t stay away from a wedding.

Rosemary loves her weddings every single season. Rosemary loves diving right in. And there were some new faces that emerged in the excitement of wedding planning as well.

Yes indeed. So do you have a favorite scene from this season or something that you really enjoyed filming? Or maybe something that was really special to you that that you’d like to tell us about?

Well, yeah, there’s a couple of things that I really loved this season.

One is, I love, love, love the scene where Rosemary finally sits in Lee’s special chair and of course, breaks the chair! I thought when I read that scene…I thought it was so funny. I had no idea how we were going to film it. That’s kind of a logistical nightmare in terms of–how do you get a trick chair that’s going to on cue, fall apart? And that’s how it was written. It was basically written that Rosemary sits in the chair; the chair collapses. And I thought, “How are we going to do this?”

I thought Peter DeLuise just came up with such a brilliant, brilliant way of filming it. You just see the close-up on the leg; you hear the crack. And then close up on Rosemary’s face as I fall out of frame. I thought that it edited together well when we were filming it. I thought it was great. I was totally convinced that it was going to edit together effectively. And then when I saw it, it was even better than I could have imagined. It was so funny. I thought, “What a perfect thing. That was so Rosemary!” The sneaky plan did not work out well for her with Lee.

And then, another theme that I loved…I think it was episode one, the season opener, where Rosemary has arrived back in town and Elizabeth and her take a walk along the lake and kind of do a little bit of catching up, the two of them. Erin {Krakow) and I just loved filming that together.

The whole scene where Rosemary is talking about the tango and how we were struggling with the tango and that stuff– Erin and I wrote that ourselves actually. I came to Erin and I said, “I think Rosemary should start the scene out with a funny story by Rosemary about her travels.” And so, Erin and I went back and forth, back and forth, brainstorming various ideas and making ourselves laugh at the different ideas, and then we ended up coming up with that one. And the scene was so picturesque. So beautiful. With the lake in the background and the church, and you see these two women just strolling together. I thought it was beautifully shot. I thought it was a wonderful reminder of the friendship that these two women share and that close bond. I love that scene. I loved it a lot.

Yeah, I remember that was a beautiful scene. And that’s great that you guys were a part of writing that scene. I’m always glad to hear how much the writers are very open to the cast members giving their ideas. I heard that John Tinker was visiting with everybody in the cast before filming began.

Yes, he touched base with everybody about their characters and about where their characters have been, and where the actors hoped those characters will start moving towards in the future. I thought that was wonderful and really, really respectful. You know, he’s coming in as a fresh face, as a fresh kind of leader for the show in season eight. But the rest of us, we’ve been with these characters now for years. I’m literally the only one who’s been with Rosemary since the beginning. We’ve had so many writers change over and showrunners change over.

The person who ultimately knows the characters the best at this point are the actors who play these characters. Even the directors, although we are fairly consistent with our directors, they aren’t there every episode. Peter DeLuise, I think, filmed maybe six episodes this year. And Mike Rohl filmed four episodes. But they’re not there for all twelve. So the person who is there consistently episode after episode after episode is the actor. So I thought that that was a really respectful thing to check in with everybody and ask, “What do you think is at the heart of your character?” And so that was a great way to start the season.

Thankfully, we now know there is going to be a season nine. Do you have any aspirations for what you might like to see for Lee and Rosemary in season nine?

First of all, I am very grateful to Hallmark, the fans, and everyone involved for giving us a season nine. I do have some ideas for next season, but I don’t want to give anything away yet. John and I have talked quite a bit about where our characters would head and where Rosemary would be…not just as a couple with Lee, but also Rosemary as an individual and what direction she’s going in. There’s been a lot of conversations about what that looks like and what that journey will be like in season nine. But I don’t want to give anything away because we saw where Rosemary ended season eight, and I think it’s better to not say too much at this point about next season. But yes, there’s lots of plans and lots of discussions happening. People will just have to wait to find out.

Well, that’s good to hear because that just means we can keep going. We could just keep having season after season after season and we could just keep going as long as possible. I’m sure you guys are all you’re thinking, “Hey, let’s just keep going.” I’m sure we can go for fifteen or twenty seasons, right?

{laughing} Twenty seasons…I can see wheelchairs rolling down the street!

{laughing} I know what you mean, Pascale!

Well, I definitely think everybody now is at a point where we know what an amazing gift this show has been to all of us and why this show is successful. The fans are still invested in the show. And we all are still having a good time making it. Why would we ever walk away from this? Why would we do that because if everything is still working and everything is still gelling together and so as long as that those pieces are in place as long as that’s happening…definitely I think we’d all sign on for season nine, season ten, season eleven, season twelve…Sure!

Yeah, I think so. Brian Bird always talks about going on almost indefinitely. Only time will tell. But we know there’s nothing like When Calls the Heart out there. It’s definitely filling a need, and I think even more so now in light of what our world has been going through over this past year or so. Having a show where hope exists and love and kindness and all these beautiful characters…I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with other network shows. There’s a place for them. But it’s nice to have a show you can turn on and know there’s not going to be something that pops up that makes me uncomfortable or negative. I’m not going to be biting my nails as I watch it. It’s like the comfort food of TV.

You know, I hear time and time again, especially over the course of this past year, that with so much uncertainty and so much happening in the world right now that we live in…people enjoy having an escape. And that kind of escape, entertainment, there’s value in it and there’s a place for that. There’s a place for entertainment that makes you think or feel really deeply and question things, but there’s also a place for just that genre of entertainment that allows you to leave your problems behind and escape into it, into a different world in a really positive way, and I hear that more and more. That’s always been the case with When Calls the Heart, but I definitely hear it more and more. Especially in this past year.

Exactly! Of course, I know you recently got back from Hawaii. I was so excited when I figured out what you were filming. I was ecstatic because I remembered what happened last year and I was so glad that this project was finally going forward this year. And I know you guys were excited about it. So what can you tell us about this movie that you just filmed in Hawaii?

Well as you know, the movie is called You Had Me At Aloha. It airs on June 5th. As you also know, this project has been a real labor of love for Kavan and I. We started throwing around ideas for it two years ago, and two years ago, we talked to Hallmark about the idea of doing a destination movie together. Hallmark was totally on board. And then Kavan and I started hammering out the ideas for the plot and the outline of the movie and the outline for the characters. It really started with Kavan saying to me, “What kind of character do you want to play, and I’ll play the opposite.” And at that point, for me, I really wanted to play something that was the opposite of Rosemary. I felt like the audience knows me as Rosemary so well that I’ve really got to do something totally different. Rosemary is so outgoing; she’s so extroverted. She’s so over-the-top and all joy and vibration, and so I wanted to play basically the opposite of that. I wanted to play somebody that was much more restrained, a bit reclusive, an introvert. Somebody who doesn’t like diving in headfirst and who doesn’t like adventure and excitement so much.

And that was really the birth of this movie, coupled with the idea that we wanted to have an adventure ourselves as actors, me and Kavan filming in different destinations. So I came up with that character, and Kavan said, “Okay, my character will be the opposite of that.” And then we started developing an outline and a plot around those two characters. So my character, Paige, is a producer of a travel show. But the catch is although she’s the producer of a travel show–which sounds incredibly exciting and adventure-filled–she actually doesn’t travel to any destinations. She does all of her research and producing from the safety of her life in New York and her apartment in New York.

Kavan’s character is a wild, spontaneous, adventuresome travel host on a YouTube travel show. My character needs a new host. So she ends up getting thrown Kavan’s character, Ben. Ben ends up becoming the new host, and she ends up having to produce the show with this guy whose approach to travel and approach to work and approach to life is completely opposite to her. And so, of course, it’s this kind of oil-and-water situation where these two opposites are going to have to figure out a way to produce the show together, given that their approaches to life are so opposite.

Wow, okay, well that definitely sounds like a departure for both of you from your roles on When Calls the Heart, which sounds really kind of fun.

Yeah, and that’s what we wanted. We wanted to do something different. We get to play Lee and Rosemary for six months out of every year. And so we wanted to do something different for ourselves and for the fans.

That’s cool. Now, had you been to Hawaii before this?

I had been to Hawaii with my family, but I’d never been to O’ahu actually. I’d always been to Maui. So it was really neat to go to O’ahu. It’s a different vibe on O’ahu, and there’s a combination of beautiful beaches and beautiful scenery. But coupled with also the city life of Honolulu. It was really neat because the nature of the movie is a travel show within the movie. We were seeing the whole island, and going to explore all different areas of the island of O’ahu, which was really fun to have that opportunity. So I loved it. I just loved every second of it. It was such a special experience.

That’s good. So now were you by yourself? Was your family able to come at all, or was it just you?

You know, ultimately, we decided that that wasn’t probably the best option to bring our families. The Canadian government was really strongly advising against any unnecessary travel and, although for me for work, it was necessary, it was not necessary for my family. And for them to come, then they also would have to quarantine along with me coming home again. It just is. It was a whole bigger to-do than just going and having a fun holiday. So we ultimately decided that this wasn’t the right timing for us as a family to take a holiday. I was just there on my own, and Kavan was there on his own. The two of us just filmed the movie, and then on the weekend, the two of us would kind of take off and do some sightseeing and adventuring together, the two of us.

That’s kind of what I thought. I know last year, when I talked to Kavan, he was like, “Oh yeah, my family’s gonna come.” But I figured this year because of the way things were and the way our world has changed, I was kind of figuring that it was probably just you and not your family.

It just didn’t seem like the right timing anymore. And that had been another big, big impetus for the two of us to create this project. We thought, “Oh, we’ll do this project that will be in a cool destination and it’ll give us an opportunity to have an adventure as a family.” Both of us were planning on bringing our families. But that really didn’t happen by the time the movie finally was being made. Three years later, Kavan and I thought, “Whatever, it’s fine. As long as this movie gets made.” That’s all we care about. Now, we want to get this made because it’s been our little baby for so long. We were like, “Let’s just get it done now.”

Well, I’m excited about seeing it. I’m sure the fans are also excited about seeing it. After all, the fans are always excited about seeing you two together.

This is a fun, romantic comedy with lots of banter. I think people will really like the movie; it is very funny, very funny actually. And coupled with that is the full, beautiful Hawaiian scenery, and that is just breathtaking. And so I think you’re going to have that visual beauty, and then coupled with this really fun, light-hearted banter and comedy. I am very hopeful that fans will love it.

And I’ll go a step further, I’m certain that they’ll love it I’m not even gonna say, I’m certain they’ll love it. I say it will be an instant hit. People will love it. They will tune in, and I cannot imagine people not liking it. I mean, first of all, it’s Hallmark. Secondly, it’s you two. Third, it’s a romantic comedy. I can’t think of there being negatives about this movie. Frankly, I just know they’re gonna love it.

Right. So it has to be successful because to me, it has too many things going for it.

Exactly, that’s the way I look at it. I have been so totally impressed with Hallmark during the whole pandemic. And afterwards, the way that that they have been able to continue to bring quality programming, and even programming sometimes where they’ve been stepping out and doing things that are a little bit different. I love that they’re doing that. I’m looking forward to this movie. I know it’s gonna be lots of fun, and I’m, and so I’m with you guys that I’m so glad that it finally got made because I know that it’s been something you guys have wanted to do for some time. I’m so glad that Haulmark honored that because I know that the pandemic canceled a lot of things for actors and for producers.

You know, the wonderful thing our executive at Hallmark who partnered with Kavan and I right from the very beginning on this project…she kept on checking in with us throughout the pandemic. She kept reassuring us that this movie is not canceled; it is just postponed. She told us they hadn’t shelved this project, just postponed it. And so I was very confident that it was going to happen at some point. It was just finding that right moment where we were available and it was safe. When all the elements lined up, here we are.

Exactly. Well, of course, we are hopeful that this summer you guys will start filming season nine of When Calls the Heart since we know it got renewed. But is there anything else that you’d like to mention?

No, not at the moment. We recently finished the movie and now I feel like my focus in life is just getting back into the swing of things at home with my kids. With my home and with the nice weather and my garden. So no, my focus has moved from my work back to my home life.

That’s what I thought. I mean that’s usually the way things work for you, and I’m thrilled for you. But I always ask because I know things can change very quickly in the acting world.

That’s always been the blessing of the acting world and the acting life, right? It can change in a heartbeat…what’s going on and what’s available and what you’re doing…and so it’s very spontaneous in that sense.

Well, Pascale, thank you for making the time to talk with me today.

Always happy to have a chat with you, Ruth. I’m so happy for you for all the changes that have happened in your life and that you’ve got this new position with Paul that you’re really excited about. That’s wonderful.

Well, thank you. I do look forward to the day when we can all get back together in Canada, or wherever it might be because I know we missed the Hearties convention last year because of Covid.

I was talking about that recently and just wondering when that might be a possibility again. I know everybody wants it to happen again. And it will happen again when it’s safe for that to occur.

I am hopeful it will happen again too. It’ll be nice when we have that opportunity. And the good thing is, when it does happen again, it will be such a special moment. I mean, they’re always so special, but it will be even more special the next time because it’s been some time. And it will be just like we’re all getting together as one big happy Hearties family and seeing all of our friends and getting to reconnect.

Absolutely. And thanks to you and the Hearties again for all your support!

When it comes to beauty, brains, insight, fun, excitement, talent, enthusiasm, instincts…I mean, can you even come close to the wonder who is Pascale Hutton? Whenever I have the opportunity to speak with her, I am met with a woman who is passionate about life, her family, her work, and inspiring others, all couched within a spirit that is brimming with exuberance and love. I have met this woman in person on more than one occasion, and there is no way you can leave a conversation with Pascale in a negative mood. Just her everyday bubbly nature will propel you into an enduring dimension of sunshine and celebration. And that smile and laugh??? I mean, the woman is authentic to the core and absolutely cherishes every aspect of her life. Moreover, she is always quick to highlight the work of her co-stars and others in production. Her humility and supportive nature combine together to make her the perfect on-set cohort. (She’s pretty fun off-set too, according to her fellow cast members!!)
