Season six of When Calls the Heart introduced the Hearties to several new characters, and one of the most dazzling additions was Fiona Miller, as portrayed by Kayla Wallace. I had the opportunity to interview Kayla last season, and even more thrilling than that, I actually met her at last year’s Hearties Family Reunion. In season seven of the popular Hallmark Channel/Super Channel Heart & Home show, we have seen Fiona featured even more, and it was an honor to virtually chat with Kayla yet again, an interview which I gladly share with my readers today.
RH: Fiona came to Hope Valley in season six to help with the implementation of the telephone. When you were first offered this role, were you told how many episodes your character arc would be? Why do you believe that she became such an integral part of Hope Valley?
KW: Initially, I was not certain how long Fiona would stick around. Of course, I had hoped that she would stay in Hope Valley and am very glad she did! I think as season six progressed, Fiona fell in love with the community aspect of Hope Valley. She made connections with the other ladies of the town in ways I think she never saw coming. I think Fiona brought a fresh, fun quality to the town that people had never seen before, and I think it really excited everyone!
You got to attend your first Hearties Family Reunion this past October. What was that experience like? Had you been to a fan event before? If so, how did this one compare?
The Hearties Family Reunion was a BLAST! Wow. Our fans are a force! I had never been to a fan event like that. I’ll never forget the first time I walked into that ballroom having hundreds of people smiling and some calling my name- it’s a bizarre feeling and I immediately felt all the love and energy. It was so much fun to get to chat with all the different groups, take selfies, and just soak up ALL the love! I felt like a Heartie-filled hurricane of love went through me. I definitely took a nap right after! Great day.
Now Fiona is back for season seven. What can you tease about her story arc this season?
So, as we’ve seen so far… Fiona might be opening up her eyes to the more personal intimate parts of her life. I would classify her as a workaholic- so it’s nice to see Fiona outside of her switchboard setting! You’ll see some twists and turns this season with our show that will keep everyone on their toes!
Thinking of your favorite scenes this season, who were some of the actors with whom you especially enjoyed some scenes? What was memorable about those scenes for you?
I always love my telephone switchboard scenes, especially ones I get to film with my trusty co-worker Florence. As I’ve mentioned before, I just love the Fiona/Florence friendship and Loretta {Walsh} is so much fun to work with.
This season I really enjoyed my scenes with the car! I was so happy to have scenes again with Rosemary, and driving that car was an added bonus and challenge! I had never driven a manual shift vehicle before this, so I did have to do lessons in the weeks leading up to filming to make sure everything would be safe on the day.
As we look towards a potential season eight, what are your hopes for Fiona’s story in the future? With whom would you like to share a scene that you haven’t before? Why?
Looking forward, I would like to see Fiona continue to shake things up in Hope Valley- bringing a little more of her city roots to the town. I would love to have some more scenes with Elizabeth (and Baby Jack of course!). I would also love to see Fiona interact with the kids of Hope Valley!
2019 was quite a year for you since you got to be in some Lifetime movies as well. Any special moments stand out for you from those?
Yes, 2019 was a great year! I had a lot of fun on Undercover Cheerleader. I got to go back to my dancing roots a little, and back to high school which is always fun!
I see you’re also in The Magicians this season. What can you tell us about working on that show?
Working on The Magicians was a really great experience. The cast was so great to work with and I loved my sassy, witty character Natasha.
Any other upcoming works you can mention?
As of now, what’s coming up is When Calls the Heart season 7! And I’m SO excited for everyone to see the rest of the season unfold.
Your experience with Hallmark is solid, but still not extensive. I’m sure you would love to be a part of anything Hallmark offered for you to do, but if you could have your dream role with Hallmark, what kind of role would you like and with whom would you like to work?
A musical with our incredibly musically talented WCTH cast!!!!!
What are your current favorite shows that you’re watching?
As I’ve been spending a lot of time at home while social distancing, I’ve been cooking a ton. So, I’ve been watching lots of cooking shows like The Final Table and Sugar Rush. I am looking forward to finishing The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel and rewatching The Office!
What is your favorite season of the year and why is that your favorite?
My favorite season… that is a tough one. Summer- because of the weather. Winter- because…Christmas! But I love fall as well. All the seasons!
Kayla is such a beautiful, accomplished, humble, determined, and hard-working young actress, and I am beyond thankful that her character, Fiona, has continued to invigorate Hope Valley. I truly hope to see her continued amplification within the film industry and Hallmark in general, and it gives me vast optimism for the future of this world and industry. Far too many young people in today’s world appear to be entitled, egotistical, and superficial (maybe more than just YOUNG people, come to think of it), but not Kayla. As we prepared this interview, her concern was for my family and me and that we were remaining safe during this critical, bizarre time. To be honest, that told me everything I needed to know about Kayla and more. She is an authentic, enchanting spirit, and I have no doubt that she is one who actively contributes to the “hope” in Hope Valley.
It is my desire that everyone will continue to tune in Sunday nights to the Hallmark Channel or Super Channel Heart & Home for the remainder of this epic season seven of When Calls the Heart, the show that consistently invites us to a world where the values of faith, hope, love and more abound. Moreover, I am ecstatic to witness the progression of Kayla’s character in addition to her burgeoning career. Furthermore, I would invite everyone to visit Kayla’s links below and consider following her where applicable (and tweeting along with her and the Hearties on Sunday nights). While other networks initially made me aware of the wonder that is Kayla Wallace, I am eternally appreciative to Hallmark for highlighting the virtue and elegance that she brings to every one of her projects and roles, and I can hardly wait to see what the future has in store for this captivating, gifted artist!
