Well, today I would like to speak about what God spoke to me about at Bible study last night.  My mom and I finally decided to go to the Sunday night study offered by our church, and they were studying James chapter three.  For those of you who don’t know, that is the chapter that talks about the fact that the tongue cannot be tamed.  That’s right–our tongue is the thing that gets us into the most trouble.
Do you realize that our tongue truly has the power of life and death?  Things that we say without thinking can haunt someone and stick with them their whole life.  My mom was told by her mother (who recently passed away) that she wished my mom had never been born.  That was said to my mom when she was  young, and she can still remember it at the age of almost 70!  She has forgiven her mother, but it doesn’t mean that it is forgotten.  All the negative things that the two most influential men in my life have ever said come back to me at regular times.  Even my daughter can’t get out of her head that she is overweight (even when the doctor confirmed that she isn’t), and she is only ten!  It took her some time to get over the fact that her voice is different from everyone else’s voice, and that was quite a struggle for her, too.  I am horrified when I think that my daughter has heard me say that I wish I were dead, and I have cut myself down in her presence!  Those words are embedded in her brain, and I doubt she will ever forget them.
Well, God spoke to me last night, and I told my dad that I was going to have to stop talking to him as much because we can’t get along when I open my mouth.  I never intend to say anything argumentative, but my dad is normally defensive and cutting in his replies to me.  He has his own struggles that he refuses to acknowledge, but I have decided to control my tongue even if it means not speaking to him and carrying on conversation.  I know it won’t be easy, but I know that the stress level in the house will go down.
The next time you get ready to say something, consider your words carefully.  That tongue of yours can cut down and build up in a heartbeat!

I don’t want to feel like that!
