Jennifer Shannon uses her sharp eye when finding rare garage sale treasures to resell at the consignment store she owns with business partner, Dani. When her friend dies trying to disprove rumors that a multi-million dollar home she is trying to sell has a deadly curse, Jennifer puts these intuitive skills to the test. Though a police investigation led by Detective Lynwood finds no evidence of foul play – even on the webcam footage from the night of the death – Jennifer has an ominous feeling that her friend has been murdered. Putting her keen instincts to work, Jennifer researches the history of deaths that all occurred in the room where her friend died, and examines a few key suspects with motives to murder. Jennifer’s husband Jason worries about her safety, but supports her efforts as she continues to investigate. As Jennifer uncovers clues that bring her closer to the truth, she also puts her own life in danger.
This is the third in a series of films called The Garage Sale Mystery starring Lori Loughlin, and I have had the pleasure of seeing the other two as well. I have always loved Lori–since her Full House days–and so this is one film about which I was very excited. Interestingly enough, my 11-year-old daughter sat and watched with me. Because my daughter is enraptured with When Calls the Heart, the moment Lori appeared on the screen, my daughter asked, “Isn’t that Abigail from When Calls the Heart?” I tweeted that to Lori, and I actually received my first ever tweet from this actress! I will tell you that if you haven’t seen the other two films, you will have no problem jumping right into the series, and you can rest assured there are absolutely no content advisories (except it is a murder mystery, and there might be a couple of disturbing scenes but nothing too horrible). My daughter watched the entire film, and that in of itself is amazing.
First of all, #hearties absolutely adore this movie because there are plenty of When Calls the Heart actors–I will not be reviewing each individual actor and actress but know that in addition to Lori Loughlin, you will see Steve Bacic, Johanna Newmarch, and Eva Bourne. There are plenty of characters returning from the other two films in the series. Permit me to say that there is not a single actor in this film that does not give less than a stellar performance. They all work together exceptionally well, and everything works together seamlessly.
All of the actors I mentioned were exceptional in their own right. Poor Steve plays the devoted husband of Lori’s character, and his character is certainly upstaged by her. I always say it takes a strong man to let the woman be in the lead, and his character does that well. It also requires a strong actor to let the actress steal the show. His role is played effortlessly (or seemingly so), and his rapport with Lori is absolutely ideal.
In every scene, Lori’s character comes off as sweet and often underestimated. What the character Jennifer has going for her now is that she has solved two previous mysteries, so she does have some clout. This unassuming, normal mom is a regular Miss Marple type (but much younger, more vibrant, and so much prettier). And now her kids are growing up which adds another dimension to the action. I honestly cannot recommend this film highly enough. If you have any interest in mysteries, this is the film for you.
One complaint that some may have has to do with the network on which Hallmark has chosen to air its mystery films. Some may not realize that there are two Hallmark networks, and the one where these filmed are featured is Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. Permit me to say that we had this channel even before it was rebranded (used to be Hallmark Movies), and the little bit of extra money we pay each month is worth it. In this and age, finding quality, wholesome, family movies and mysteries on television is a rather daunting task . On this channel, you can rest assured that you will find films that meet all those qualifications and more. If you like mysteries (and there are some exciting ones coming up), and if you like movies, this is a network to add to your cable/satellite line-up. And if your provider doesn’t offer it, I strongly suggest requesting it.
In short, this is the favorite of my three in the series, and not all serial films can promise that. When a series like this only improves as more films are made, you can know that this is decidedly worth watching. Lori is the driving force behind this film, but without the other actors and actresses (as well as exceptional direction–Peter DeLuise who also directed All of My Heart), the movie would fall flat. All the other actors in the film respond to Lori in such a way that is purely magical and exceptional. Certainly a film worth looking up. (Oh and I didn’t figure out “who done it,” but my mom almost did.)
