As a Christian, I am extremely troubled by today’s feature.  The Crusades are a horrid blotch on the history of Christianity, and I am ashamed that so many people killed Muslims in the name of the Lord.  On this date in 1095, Pope Urban II made a very famous speech at the Council of Clermont which was responsible for the […]

I did not know it was FDR who truly confused Americans when it comes to Thanksgiving. November 26 was the traditional day for Thanksgiving, and it was Lincoln that moved it  to the fourth Thursday of November.  FDR departed from tradition, and he moved the holiday up a week, and people did not like it.  Finally, on this date in […]

I have very fond memories of Woody Woodpecker, and on this date in 1940, this character first appeared in the animation short Knock Knock.  Mel Blanc (I love him!) was the original voice of this woodpecker.  Woody made his television début in 1957, and he has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. On this date in 1947, the “Hollywood 10” as they were called were found in contempt for not answering before Congress.  And who were these notorious 10?  Thank McCarthyism for this debacle.   They became a part of the Hollywood blacklist due to suspected Communist and un-American actions.  This blacklist actually contained 500 names before it all ended in the 1960’s. […]

I first was introduced to today’s feature as a child at Christmastime.  The perennial favorite–How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  I never tire of watching this, and on this date in 1887, Boris Karloff was born.  William Henry Pratt was his name, and he was  born in London.  He was actually related to Anna Leonowens of the King and I and […]

No, I wasn’t there, but today is a solemn occasion. On this date in 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. As this is commemorated today, may we recall a life that was snuffed out unexpectedly and the end of an era. As I told my mom, he did more during his short presidency than most do in a normal […]

Today’s feature was rather an interesting fact for me.  On this date in 1922, Rebecca L. Felton became the first female senator.  Georgia Senator Thomas E. Watson suddenly passed away, and Georgia’s governor appointed her as senator.  She was 87 at the time.  The following day, a special election was held, and she was replaced.  Thus, she served for about […]

On this date in 1910, revolution began in Mexico as they prepared to overthrow their dictator.  Revolution Day in Mexico is celebrated annually as they remember 34 years of military rule, but ten years of civil war followed this. Today is an important day in Catholic Church history.  On this date in 1826, the new St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome was consecrated by Pope Urban VIII.   It was built on the supposed burial site of  St. Peter.
