At the invitation of an estranged relative, a young woman travels with her niece and nephew to a castle in Europe for Christmas where she unwittingly falls for a dashing Prince.
My review:
This is probably one of my favorite Christmas romances on Hallmark. Although princesses are not often my interest, this is one of those stories that reminds me that romance and dreams still exist in this world. Happy endings are possible. And you never know when your life may suddenly change for the better in a way that you never dreamed possible.
From the outset, the story is a bit predictable. Most Hallmark films are, right? But this story has a couple things that set it apart–brilliant acting and unexpected twists in the story. It is these two items that ensure this will be a film that will appeal to the entire family. And although I have seen this movie several times, whenever it is on, I find myself immersed in it yet again.
Let’s begin with the impressive female lead, Katie McGrath. This is honestly the first and only thing in which I have seen her (although she does have some more recent things listed in her credits), and her portrayal of Jules Day, the struggling aunt trying to raise her unruly niece and nephew, is absolutely alluring. As her character goes from tough, dreamy, downtrodden New Yorker to sweet princess, she is credible, endearing, and enchanting. Although she is outwardly attractive, it is also easy to connect with the sweet emotion she brings to her role. There is no doubt she is as beautiful inside as out.
Of course, we must not neglect to mention the dashing actor who plays Prince Ashton, Sam Heughan. I had no idea what else he had done, but I see now that he is currently in the TV series Outlander (though I have not seen this show, I can imagine how amazing he would be). Simply stated, he fits this part like the proverbial glove. He is the down-to-earth prince who cares more about truth than traditions. And when he and Katie are on the screen together…
Need I say more? There is no doubt that these two make the ideal couple, and their interactions are cute, funny, and genuine. Needless to say they are handsome and elegant couple. I honestly don’t know who could have played this couple better. It is truly genius and magical casting.
Lest you think that I have forgotten the other members of the cast, permit me to mention the well-known actor who portrays the crotchety Duke (father of the prince)–none other than Sir Roger Moore.
He’s best-known for his James Bond work (no, I have never seen a James Bond film–shocking, I know), but he is so much more than that. Effortlessly, he plays this role to a fault, but his character’s heart can be melted by a little girl (that is such a touching part of the story–might bring a tear to your eye). It is a joy to see this tremendous actor in such a heart-warming role, and it is a good reminder of his amazing versatility.
I could easily mention more of the actors and actresses that make this movie as stellar as it is.
But I think the pictures say it best. There is not a single bad casting choice in the film.
I adore the smart humor throughout the film. Be sure to look out for the scenes surrounding the decorating of the Christmas tree (watch out for the maid on staff and her response to the tree). And of course there is the snooty “fiance” of the prince. For the holidays, this is an utterly charming film that will remind you of what is important at Christmas and all year long.
