Why the NKJV New Testament, Tracing Edition Is Unlike Any Bible I’ve Used

In a world where most people carry their Bible on a smartphone, there’s something refreshing about returning to a more hands-on experience with Scripture.

That’s exactly what drew me to the NKJV New Testament, Tracing Edition.

I’ll be honest—I love Bible apps. They make it easy to pull up a verse anywhere, search for passages instantly, and keep God’s Word at your fingertips. But there’s one thing they can’t replicate: the physical act of interacting with Scripture through writing.

This Bible takes that idea to a whole new level.

Instead of simply reading the text, you’re invited to trace every word of Scripture as you move through the New Testament. At first, I thought it sounded interesting. After spending time with it, I realized it’s much more than a novelty—it’s a meaningful way to slow down and truly absorb God’s Word.

Why Tracing Scripture Matters

We’ve all had the experience of reading a passage and realizing moments later that we don’t remember what we just read.

Tracing changes that.

When you carefully trace each word, you’re forced to slow down. You notice phrases you might otherwise skim past. You pay attention to details. You linger over verses.

Research has consistently shown that handwriting engages different parts of the brain than typing. In fact, studies have found that writing by hand can improve learning, comprehension, and memory retention because it requires deeper cognitive processing.

Many educators have long observed that students often remember information better when they write it down rather than simply read it. That’s one reason note-taking by hand remains such a powerful learning tool.

For me, tracing Scripture feels like a form of meditation on God’s Word. Instead of rushing through a chapter, I’m intentionally dwelling on every sentence.

Writing God’s Word on Your Heart

One of the themes that immediately came to mind while using this Bible was Psalm 119:11:

“Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.”

There is something powerful about physically writing God’s Word.

I look forward to tracing some of my favorite verses and passages. I can already see how this would help with Scripture memorization. The repeated exposure through reading, seeing, tracing, and thinking about each word creates multiple connections that reinforce learning.

Even if I never go back and read my traced pages again, I know the process itself is helping God’s Word take deeper root in my mind and heart.

Features I Love

The NKJV New Testament, Tracing Edition was clearly designed with this experience in mind.

Some standout features include:

  • Lightly printed gray-scale text that’s easy to trace
  • Large, clear 17-point type
  • Wide margins for notes, journaling, and artwork
  • A lay-flat spine that makes tracing comfortable
  • Topical reading plans covering faith, hope, grace, peace, anxiety, community, the Holy Spirit, and more
  • The trusted New King James Version translation

I especially appreciate the wide margins. They provide space not only for tracing but also for personal reflections, prayers, and creative expression.

A Great Tool for Families

Another aspect I love is that this can easily become a family activity.

Imagine sitting down with your children, grandchildren, or spouse and tracing Scripture together. It’s a simple but meaningful way to spend time in God’s Word while creating intentional moments of discipleship and conversation.

In an age of constant digital distractions, activities that encourage slowing down and focusing on Scripture are more valuable than ever.

Final Thoughts

The NKJV New Testament, Tracing Edition has reminded me that engaging with Scripture doesn’t have to be rushed.

This Bible encourages readers to slow down, reflect, and interact with God’s Word in a deeply personal way. For anyone who struggles with focus during Bible reading, wants to memorize more Scripture, or simply desires a fresh devotional experience, I think this is a wonderful resource.

What started as a unique concept quickly became something I genuinely look forward to using.

If you’re looking for a new way to deepen your relationship with God’s Word, the NKJV New Testament, Tracing Edition may be exactly what you’re looking for.
