A Journey of Faith and Perseverance

Unsung Hero narrates the journey of David Smallbone, a man who, after the downfall of his thriving music company in Australia, relocates his family to the United States to rebuild their lives. The story becomes even more compelling due to the unwavering faith of David’s wife, Helen, who holds her family together through thick and thin. This isn’t just a film about overcoming hardship—it’s a testament to the strength of a mother’s love and the power of faith, making it a story that could resonate with any family facing challenges.

Joel Smallbone, one-half of the Christian band for KING & COUNTRY, plays his own father in the film. He delivers a heartfelt performance that encapsulates the spirit of the Smallbone family. The film’s production quality, from the cinematography to the sound design, is top-notch, enhancing the viewing experience. Daisy Betts, who portrays Helen, brings a grace and determination that will inspire you.

A Family-Friendly Film with a Message

As a faith-based film, Unsung Hero masterfully incorporates the gospel message into its narrative without being preachy. It’s a story that feels real, never shying away from the genuine struggles of a family trying to establish a new life in a foreign country. You’ll also appreciate that this is a family-friendly movie with no violence, profanity, or inappropriate content, making it a film that can be enjoyed by all members of the family.

For those who enjoy cameos, there are appearances by actors portraying Christian music icons like Amy Grant and Carman, adding to the film’s authentic feel. It’s a true-to-life journey that captures the highs and lows of a family’s faith experience, making it an excellent choice for a night out with the family.

My Thoughts on Unsung Hero

I had high expectations for this film, and it didn’t disappoint. Watching Joel Smallbone, one-half of the Christian band for KING & COUNTRY, portray his father was incredible.  The addition of Candace Cameron-Bure in a pivotal role, along with her production company’s involvement, made the film even more special. Seeing Terry O’Quinn (from “Lost”) in a memorable role was a bonus.

What I found most impactful about Unsung Hero was its raw honesty. It didn’t sugarcoat the challenges that the Smallbone family faced, and it didn’t shy away from showcasing the power of faith in their lives. This film is not just another feel-good story—it’s a journey that serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of faith, family, and perseverance, leaving a lasting impression on its viewers.
