Independent living communities include tiny homes and apartments that can accommodate aging adults. These spaces are designed to minimize responsibilities like housekeeping and yard maintenance.

Independent living facilities don’t offer hands-on medical care, unlike other senior housing options. Instead, they focus on centralized hospitality services to foster socialization.

Residents can enjoy a full calendar of social activities like happy hours, excursions, yoga, pickleball, classes, and more.

Cost

Many seniors desire a lifestyle that allows them to pursue hobbies and spend quality time with family. However, continual responsibilities like home maintenance and cooking can become burdensome. That’s where independent living comes in.

Independent living facilities typically offer various services and amenities that make life easier for residents. Services may include onsite recreation and entertainment, beauty salons, and general stores. Some communities also provide meal packages or a-la-carte dining options for those who want the convenience of having meals prepared by staff chefs.

Low-income senior apartments are available in some areas for those who cannot afford to pay for private independent living.

Amenities

Whether you or a loved one is looking for independent living or assisted living, the housing and services offered at each type of facility will likely differ. The amenities and features of different types of housing can affect expenses and insurance coverage.

Generally speaking, independent living in Jacksonville, Florida doesn’t offer hands-on care. Instead, they focus on creating an engaging and social lifestyle for seniors. This is accomplished through centralized hospitality services like a restaurant-style dining room and activities that help to combat isolation.

An assisted living community provides more hands-on assistance with daily activities than independent living. Depending on your chosen facility, it may also provide medical resources to step in and assist with medical needs when needed. Typically, an assisted living community will have staff members on hand 24/7 to assist residents with daily tasks.

Socialization

Many families assume that moving their senior loved one to independent or assisted living will isolate them socially. But this could not be further from the truth. They will have many opportunities to engage with other residents through activities and social events designed with their interests in mind.

These types of stimulation significantly improve moods and help seniors stay mentally active, boosting cognitive abilities. Additionally, regular interaction with others helps to reduce anxiety and depression levels and lowers blood pressure.

Moreover, it is essential to note that socialization does not only enhance a senior’s emotional health but also their physical health and immune system. Loneliness and isolation can weaken the body’s natural immunity, leading to infections and illness. This is why most assisted living communities promote socialization through group events and activities, which can help to combat this issue.

Health Care

If your loved one has a health condition makes it difficult to get around or perform daily activities, independent living may not be the best option. Seniors with such conditions are better suited for memory care, which provides the expertise and personal care that help them enjoy life to its fullest.

On the other hand, independent living facilities are designed for seniors who do not require medical or caregiving assistance. They are usually modeled after apartments, townhouses, or tiny homes and provide a range of amenities like dining areas and recreational spaces.

In addition, they have staff members on-call 24/7 for emergencies. Residents can also hire in-home caregivers to provide them with additional home healthcare services if they choose. Assisted living offers a range of healthcare services but is not intended to cater to complex and specialized health needs. It is, therefore, not a substitute for a skilled nursing facility. It is, however, an excellent option for individuals with limited healthcare needs.
