When it comes to choosing a new mattress I am excited by the multitude of designs and materials you get to choose from. I mean, a few decades ago, our parents were limited to innerspring beds that felt rigid and stiff, and were way too heavy to move once installed.

Not to mention, the noise of coils that accompanied every move a sleeper made is legendary. To this day I avoid a bed with coils because I know it will betray even the most intimate moments a couple shares in the bedroom. Of course, designs have changed and nowadays innersprings are all right, but the fear remains.

Considering this it will come to no surprise that I favor all-foam designs such as Emma and Eve. As you can imagine by the name, these are elegant surfaces, with impressive features, but the coolest thing about them is the box in which they are delivered. It’s small, lightweight, and contains an entire mattress!

So, if you are into all-foam designs as I am, let’s have a look at the main features to follow

Back Support

The element known as back support (at least with all-foam beds) is a layer of thicker, firmer foam that serves as the base. This provides a pushback effect (less evident than with an innerspring) that counteracts the contouring and sinkage provided by the softer layers on top.

The result is a very accommodating sleep surface that keeps the spine in an almost-perfect alignment and keeps the entire bed free of pressure points (which I’ll discuss below). If you read some Eve mattress reviews, you’ll notice that the base is a thick layer of high-density foam that is supporting and durable. This is the one that will keep your back supported while the other layers will keep you comfortable.

Pressure Points

Regardless of the position you favor (side, back, or stomach) there are certain areas in our body that are heavier than the rest. Usually, these are the hips, shoulders, and knees, and if the mattress is not designed to accommodate them, they will sink deeper into the layers. In doing so, a pressure point will be created in between the surface and the body, which usually translates to stiffness and localized pain.

Now, the cool thing about an all-foam mattress is that it creates a nice combination of soft and firm layers, resulting in a pressure-free surface. A bed such as Eva or Emma will keep you comfy and cozy throughout the night!

Inner Construction

Most all-foam designs boast a multi-layered inner construction, to increase the comfort of the sleeper and create a more durable bed.

Both Eve and Emma feature three inner-layers and a breathable cover that is soft to touch and adds to the overall softness of the bed. Still, if you want to choose a different design, it’s important to understand that the inner structure should always have a layer of contouring foam, a layer designed to improve the ventilation and one that serves as the base.
In the case of Eve, you get the contouring foam first, and the cooling layer is sandwiched in the middle, while the Emma (click here to see the review) starts with the cooling layer and puts the contouring foam before the base.

Temperature Control

Foam is not the most cooling of materials and you probably know by now that memory foam sleeps hot. This is why you’ll always find either a layer of foam with cooling gel insertions or an entire layer of gel, designed to absorb the heat and pass it away from the surface.

But cooling gels are not the only materials that can be used to improve ventilation. Some manufacturers use graphite or copper, which also keeps the entire surface clean of allergens. Overall, foam is not enough to provide you with good temperature control – you always need to look for models that feature an additional material.
