Passion Flowers
by Molly Charles
Adult Contemporary Romance
Paperback & ebook, 300 pages
August 10th 2016 by The Wild Rose Press, Inc.
Ambitious career woman Leigh Taylor Cole and laid-back islander Deke Kearney have nothing in common—except a sizzling chemistry that turns their lives upside down and makes Leigh question her promise to bring him home to Seattle.
But Deke’s going nowhere with the uptight mainlander. Until, that is, kidnappers threaten his son’s safety and send the threesome into hiding in a secluded up-island cabin.
Proximity and provocative Maui breezes work their magic, forging a passionate bond between Leigh and Deke and forcing Leigh to face her greatest fear. And eventually to unlock a secret buried so deeply in her past, she’s hidden it even from herself.

Molly Charles is the pseudonym of team writers Jena MacPherson and Joanne Otness. Lifelong friends, the award-winning duo grew up in Washington’s wine country.
Jena was a staff editor and travel writer for Sunset Magazine in Seattle. Joanne was an international flight attendant for Pan American Airlines with travel assignments around the world. Both love travel, dogs of all shapes and sizes, gardening, the arts, double-tall Starbucks lattes, and writing Molly Charles books.
They are drawn again and again by the allure of the Hawaiian Islands, especially Maui—the setting for their current novel.

Are Two Heads Better Than One?
Guest Post By Molly Charles (Jena MacPherson and Joanne Otness)
As co-authors we’re often asked how and why we write as a team. Is it easier? Faster? More effective? ‘Are two heads really better than one?’
The answer is, well . . . complicated.
Creative collaboration is not a new concept (think Broadway musicals and television scripts), yet we’ve discovered there’s no one best way to go about it. Some teams combine complementary skills. One’s a wordsmith and the other a storyteller, or one’s a plotter and the other writes great dialogue. As to how it’s done, we’ve met teams who use various methods from one writer doing the whole first draft and the other the second, to one keyboarding as the other hovers nearby, dictating—and variations in between.
Our process goes like this: We brainstorm a setting or theme, a conflict between our hero and heroine and discuss possible plot directions. This is usually done informally, sipping something tall and cool, dressed in comfy clothes with feet propped up on the closest lawn chair or ottoman. And ideally in a tropical locale, at a lake resort in summer, or sometimes in a restaurant over a long lunch. Then say Joanne, takes a stab at getting something on paper. This could be dialogue, a scene description or narrative. When she’s “emptied her brain” she lobs the draft to Jena who layers, expands, edits and returns the material.
After a few rallies, we run the chapter by our separate critique groups, get input and suggestions, discuss the feedback, and then fine-tune the copy. We repeat this process chapter by chapter until the book grows into a living, breathing story.
Besides the fun and camaraderie of working together, it’s often exciting to see what your characters have been up to while you’ve been gardening, shopping, or working elsewhere. They really do take on a life of their own!
So back to the original question: are two heads better than one? Our answer is two heads are not better, faster, or more effective than one–but different than one. The third voice that evolves in team writing is not the same as each individual voice, and the process of producing a collaborative work is its own unique creative experience.
Who knows, you may want to find a writing partner, combine your ideas, and find out for yourself!
