Because I am a devoted fan of the shows and films that appear on the Hallmark network (and I adore the mystery franchise, especially), I remember seeing a young man step into the role of Logan, the son of Jennifer (Lori Loughlin) and Jason (Steve Bacic), and I couldn’t place why he looked so familiar. My Hearties friends quickly filled me in when they mentioned he had been on season one of When Calls the Heart. Of course! I was elated to get the opportunity recently to ask this talented but busy guy some questions about his work on Garage Sale Mystery as well as his overall experiences within this business.

RH: What inspired you to become an actor? What kind of training have you received?

CH: I was always the kid who loved to dress up. I loved to wear my Spider-Man costume all the time and pretend I was him. My parents always said I had a very vivid imagination, and I kept them entertained. When I was in kindergarten, my mom was babysitting a girl from my class who had an agent and was going to auditions. She told me about how she got to play with toys at the auditions, and if you book the job, you get to be on TV and sometimes keep the toys. I asked my mom if I could do that too, so eventually she found me an agent, and I started auditioning. So I guess it was my friend and my desire to be on TV that inspired me.

As for training , I’ve taken classes here and there, but nothing full-time.

When Calls the Heart was an amazing experience and one I’ll never forget. The cast and crew on the show are such nice people, and I’m so grateful to Michael Landon, Jr. and Brian Bird for giving me the chance to portray Bo Grady. I really enjoyed seeing the sets and learning about how people lived in the early 1900’s. At times, when I was working on a dimly lit set, it was very easy to get into the time period and feel that I was really there.

What was it like stepping into an established role and joining the cast of Garage Sale Mystery when someone else had played the part previously?

When I joined the cast of Garage Sale Mystery, I was made to feel very welcome and straight away, I was part of the family. I know Brendan Meyer and really respect him as an actor, so it was really neat to take over the role he had played.

This most recent Garage Sale Mystery–what can you tell us about your character and/or the story without giving away too much?

Well, Logan, as you will know, if you’ve watched the show, is Jenn and Jason’s youngest kid. He’s a good kid and finds it amusing to hear about how his mom gets involved in trying to solve the crimes. The latest one just aired a couple weekends ago, and Logan and Jason went on a camping trip which didn’t end how they or their family expected. It was fun to film it.

What is it like working with the cast of Garage Sale Mystery? Any special filming stories?

Lori Loughlin is a really lovely person, and she made me feel like I’d always been there. Steve Bacic and Eva Bourne are such awesome people, too. Steve and I get along really well.  Kevin O’Grady, who plays Detective Lynwood, is a very funny guy, too.  I feel very lucky to be part of the family now. We have a lot of fun on set, and we love to joke around between scenes.

Do you have any upcoming works you can mention?

I do have other works coming up, and I’ll be sure to update everyone on my Facebook  page and Twitter when there’s anything I can mention.

How have you balanced school and your acting work?

Since the beginning of grade five, I have been homeschooled for a number of reasons, including my acting career. When a young actor is hired to work during the school year, there is a tutor on set to help them if they have to be there for a certain number of days. Young actors have to still do three hours of school work during the day, so it’s always covered.

What has been your most challenging role so far?

I think that my most challenging role so far has been my role as Young Lex Luthor on Smallville. That role included lots of emotions and action, and I had my hair dyed red at one time and had it shaved another time. Believe it or not, being shaved completely bald is actually quite challenging because it hurts when they have to use a Bic razor to get right down to the skin.  Having said that, it was an amazing role to play, and when I was cast, I didn’t quite understand how iconic Lex Luthor is. I’m forever grateful that I was the one chosen to play him.

What do you do in your free time? How do you unwind?

In my free time, I spend a lot of time with my girlfriend and with my other friends. I also love to play video games. I’m very proud of my camera that I saved up for, and I really enjoy going out to take photos. Also, I’m a huge fan of fashion, so I spend time checking out the clothing from my favourite designers.

What is the story behind your interest in magic tricks?

When I was about seven or eight, I played the role of The Boy in a student’s grad film that was a live action version of The Velveteen Rabbit.  I was the only kid on set, and I loved to hang out with the crew between scenes. One of the crew taught me to do a trick with a coin, and after that I was hooked. I started visiting the magic store in the children’s market on Granville Island in Vancouver, and the staff there got to know me really well and would show me how to do tricks.  It all started with the coin trick, and now I’ve learned a lot of other ones including some amazing card tricks that I love to entertain people with.

After getting a peek into the life and work of Connor, I have to say I was impressed with how this young man manages to remain a “normal” teen while still appearing in some amazing roles that have brought him fantastic experiences that have sought to shape him as a person and an actor. While no one knows the future for certain, it is evident that Connor has his head in the right place, and he is ready to invest the time and work in whatever role he is placed in this business and in life in general. I look forward to seeing what doors open up for him in the future, and I certainly wish him all the success in the world.
