When Avery is assigned a Valentine’s Day advice column for the local newspaper, she’s less than thrilled. After a string of disappointing Valentine’s days, she’s all but given up on love. But when Avery takes her dog o the vet and meets the handsome veterinarian Brenden, she throws herself into the assignment. A chance encounter with the newly single Brenden leads to a date and Avery starts thinking maybe this year will be different.

As the second offering in Hallmark’s “Countdown to Valentine’s Day,” this is a sweet film that will give you the opportunity to escape into a world of happy endings, caring people, cute animals, and genuine positivity. When watching Hallmark films like these, it is important to remember the purpose behind such films. Don’t expect deep issues, action-packed scenes, nor anything that emphasizes what is wrong with the world. Hallmark focuses on what is right with the world, and their films seek to uplift, entertain, and provide an opportunity for quality and wholesome family viewing.

Mig Micario as Roland

Mig Micario as Roland

In my continued commitment to recognizing as many “minor” characters as possible, Mig stood out to me as Roland. While being featured in a Hallmark film such as this may be a bit of a departure from his other works, he brings a sense of coolness and masculinity to the dance floor. As the dancing instructor in the film, he is imposing and memorable.

Morgan Davies as Lisa

Morgan Davies as Lisa

There is almost nothing I like better than finding actresses who have a small list of credits but stil make an impact in their roles. And Morgan has done just that in the role of Lisa. As the teacher of a cooking class, she is professional and smart while looking as darling as one would expect from a character like this.

Beverley Elliott as Maggie

Beverley Elliott as Maggie

Yet another well-known face in the world of television, Beverley is a treat to see as Maggie, the Avery’s mother. I know I have seen her in a handful of things over her long career, and she never fails to impress. Having an actress of her caliber in even a minor role such as this cannot conceal the beauty, joy and grace she brings to the screen in her role.

Daryl Shuttleworth as Jim

Daryl Shuttleworth as Jim

And as Jim, Avery’s father, Daryl is positively matchless. He is an actor who just exudes respect and masterful depiction no matter his role. Even though he is only on the screen for a relatively short time (compared with others), his imposing presence and impeccable portrayal of this warm, sensitive, and understanding father reminds the audience of the beautiful relationship that a father and daughter can (and hopefully do) have. One of the things that causes this film to stand out is that for once, the daughter doesn’t go running to her mother for advice on men. Instead, he comes to Avery because he genuinely cares, and Avery receives his well-timed and well-suited advice with joy. Daryl’s character definitely understands Avery, and gives her exactly what she needs without being too pushy or trite. What I most appreciate about Daryl is that no matter what role he is given, he infuses every ounce of his expertise into making that role as genuine as possible. And he does this whether he has one line or appears in every single scene. He is a true master class in the art acting in motion. Also, read my exclusive interview with him right here.

Anthony Bolognese as Jeremy

Anthony Bolognese as Jeremy

There is nothing like seeing Hallmark when it comes to featuring talented and cute kids, and Anthony is perfect in the role of Jeremy. It is my first time to see him, but from the moment that face appeared on screen, I was captivated. Even at his tender age, it is easy to see that he is a natural, and his description of his Valentine is absolutely the sweetest thing ever. I hope to see this young man featured in more films and shows in the future, and as it seems that he is grounded (I’ve already “met” him mom on twitter, and see seems to be down-to-earth and supportive of her son and his fans), I can only hope big things will be headed in his way in the years to come.

Mike Dopud as Reed

Mike Dopud as Reed

Hopeful Cedar Cove fans will recognize the man seated next to “Jeremy” on the couch. Yes, Mike has a small part as Reed, the father of this little boy and wife of Hannah (whom we will meet soon). Unfortunately, Mike is only seen very briefly, but there is just something about his smile and his very presence that draws the viewers eyes to his character. Not that he is attempting to steal the scene, but his big smile always captures my heart. He remains in the background and knows his place in his supporting role, and he never upstages anyone. However, Mike is again one of those actors who is a master at making the most of every role in which he is featured, no matter how small. He is never out of character, and he never appears uncomfortable in any scene or working with any actor in the film. I surely hope Hallmark gives him a chance to play a more principal character very soon as I would love to see more of his prowess.

Hilary Jardine as Pru

Hilary Jardine as Pru

Yet another new face to me, Hilary is positively enchanting as Pru. She is the one who continues to rebuff a certain male customer’s noticeable advances even though everyone knows she is interested, too. While we don’t know Pru’s story, it is nice to have a secondary love story with such an attractive and fantastic actress such as Hilary. There is no doubt that she is an accomplished actress, and here is hoping her career will continue to soar to new heights.

Jeremy Guilbaut as Kit

Jeremy Guilbaut as Kit

Certainly no stranger to Hallmark (The Christmas Note, My Boyfriend’s Dogs)Jeremy pulls off the flawless bungling, nervous customer who does his best to capture the attention of Pru, and it is doubtful he will before the end of the film. As Kit, he is the friend and co-worker of Brendan, and the humor he injects into the story is welcome and relatable. Hopefully Hallmark (and other networks) will realize what a talent he possesses and feature him in more roles soon.

Heather Doerksen as Hannah

Heather Doerksen as Hannah

I think Heather’s smile sums up her role quite well in this film. She is Hannah, Avery’s sister, who is laboring to ensure that romance still exists in her marriage (with Mike Dopud’s character, Reed) in spite of busy schedules and a child (Jeremy, played by Anthony Bolognese). I have been a fan of Heather’s since I saw her in All of My Heart last year, and this role is simply delightful. No matter what role she is cast, she always immerses herself into it with vigor and elegance with a good sense of humor thrown in to boot. Even though her role is somewhat small, she proves that this role is ideal, and you just cannot overlook her. Her interactions with every actor are amazing, and she seems completely at ease. I anticipate the day when Heather is featured as a leading lady (she more than deserves that honor, in my opinion).

Brenda Crichlow as Lauren Post

Brenda Crichlow as Lauren Post

I could not place Brenda until I saw Gourmet Detective listed in her resume as well as a few other Hallmark credits. And as Lauren Post, she is impeccable. As Avery’s editor, she is always pushing Avery to new heights, and she will not accept “no” as an answer. Even though she is a somewhat hard-lined businesswoman, there are a couple scenes she has with Avery that demonstrate she still has a heart and does hope that Avery will find true happiness in love again. Brenda easily suits this role in every detail, and here’s hoping that we continue to see her lovely face and wonderful talent featured on Hallmark (and elsewhere) for many years to come.

Kimberly Sustad as Mckenna

Kimberly Sustad as Mckenna

And yet another actress from Gourmet Detective–Kimberly is the ideal rejected, forlorn girlfriend who still carries a torch for the one that goy away. Just to look at her sad face engenders sympathy for her unusual situation (or not that unsual in reality). Thankfully, Kimberly is able to make McKenna look triumphant at the end of the film in spite of her lot in life.  I think all too many ladies will relate to her character’s situation, and it’s appealing to see Hallmark add a bit of reality in love. The difference is the way in which she ultimately conducts herself–this is Hallmark, and it is a good reminder that negativity and accusations will not change what is meant to be. So instead of fighting against the situation, it makes much better sense to move on and know that in the end, there are better fish in the sea for the scorned lover.

Of course, the unquestioned stars of this film are Sam and Sarah who play Bredan and Avery respectively. To look at them in this picture, they are the ideal Valentine’s Day couple. But to get to this point, the viewers can rest assured that they will have plenty of bumps along the way. The way of love never does run smooth, and Hallmark is a master at ensuring that the rollercoaster is fun and exciting without being too wild.

Unfortunately, I have never seen either of these accomplished actors, but their reputation precedes them. And together, their chemistry just fits like a glove. While it’s clear that they have their differences, and for a moment the viewers are worried that they may let a silly deception tear them apart, this is Hallmark. We can rest assured that Avery and Brendan will eventually find their happily ever after together, and when they do, seing them together will be sheer heaven.

They have their share of delightful moment together, including some truly fun dates. Avery has hidden her true professional identity, and she has no idea that her biggest critic is really in her arms and the object of her affections.

Their love story demonstrates that true love can and will defies all potential obstacles, and they look so delectable together that viewers will be enraptured whenever they are together.

Sam assumes the role of Brendan, and he lends all of charm, wit, and handsome features to this hard-working veteranarian. (Keep an eye out for Avery’s dog, and that dog is part of what draws them togheter.) I was unaware of Sam before I saw him in this film, but there is no dobut that he has had a long career due to his effortless acting and willingness to inject likability and feeling into every role he assumes. Hallmark has done well to employ such a handsome, suave, and debonair genleman as their hunky lead.

Whether hs is enjoying Avery’s company, leaving disparaging remarks on Valentine’s Day posts, or even opposing the object of affection, viewers will find that they just cannot hate this guy.  He’s just too lovable and good-looking for his own good.

With a lovely reputation that precedes her, Sarah certainly wins the hearts of the viewers with very little effort on her part. That signature red hair and naturally lovely features instantly makes her a fan favorite leading lady. As Avery, I could somewhat identify with her since she is a writer. I could sympathize with her when she kept getting attacked by an angry commentator. And the dramatic irony in this film makes us compassionate to her plight even more.

Just like Sam is a feast for the eyes for the lady viewers, the men will probably enjoy seeing Sarah’s natural beauty that appears effortless and yet uncomplicatedly sophisticated. No matter what, viewers will fall in love with her character and only want the best for her. Sarah portays Avery as the girl next door, and she never puts on any airs.

While my favorite scenes will still be those of Avery and her father, there is denying what a sweet couple these two make. They are evenly matched in the appearance area, and both seem to have a great rapport that seems to ring true and engender affection from the audience.

No matter what you may believe about Valentine’s Day and true love, just take a moment January 31, and tune into Hallmark channel and escape to the world of “happily-ever-after,” and allow Sarah and Same to be your tour guides.

I’ve been trying to figure out the dog breed as well. I belive it’s a terrior…not sure if us a Jack Russell or another form. The tale gives it away.

I would also like to know the breed of the dog since my 6 year old fell in love with him! It’s not a cavalier

I am so sorry Jackie. That was the best information I could offer. I have not received any other updates. I was told Cavalier and since that it not right, I don’t know where else to turn.
