First of all, let me say that as much as I enjoyed the first movie in this series (read that review here), this was even more delectable than the first. Sometimes that doesn’t happen with serial films, but this plot is more succinct, and the returning actors seemed to understand and play their characters with more credibility and dare I say abandon than last time.  It is also worth noting that although there is no profanity, there are some potentially disturbing scenes for younger viewers (nothing bloody or gory but there is a scene that so had me on the edge of my seat I had to catch my breath before continuing to watch it). If you like cozy mysteries, that film should fully appeal to you.

While one of the best things about serial films is recurrent characters, sometimes a new person enters the scene who just fits in so perfectly. Safe to say that Robin Dunne is one such person. I had not seen him in anything previously, but he plays Roe’s love interest, mystery author Robin Daniels. From the moment he entered the scene, I was enchanted with his looks as well as his impeccable acting.  It didn’t take any time for him to warm up to his character nor his co-star, Candace Cameron Bure. I can only hope to see him or his character on future installments of this series (or at least elsewhere on Hallmark). I was completely impressed, and I found his style and demeanor refreshing on a channel that sometimes has men who are handsome but indistinguishable from each other.  No doubt, he is in a class by himself, and the character he portrayed was absolutely charming.

Of course, the question always is–what about chemistry?

Need I say more? These two had an easy way of working together, and nothing ever seemed to rattle Robin’s character. He was the dark and mysterious author, but underneath all that, he genuinely cared about Roe. I wouldn’t mind seeing these two again. Of course, Candace is probably one of those actresses who makes everyone feel comfortable (that’s the feeling I get from her at least), and so even though these two never got really close (until the end), they were pure bliss on the screen.

Marilu Henner as Aida Teagarden

I was ecstatic to see Marilu Henner returning as Roe’s overbearing mom. Just as before, it is evident that Marilu is a master at playing this kind of role, and she did not hesitate to get right back into character in this film. She is still that mom who longs for her daughter to marry well, but she also longs for and end to her daughter’s “dangerous” involvement with the real murder club.  But underneath all of that, you know she loves her daughter and only wants what best. Thankfully, she’s not quite as meddlesome as she was in the first film, but regardless there is no better fit for this role than Marilu. Her command of this role completely mesmerizes everyone, and I can hardly wait to see her in the next installment! Moreover, sometimes I had to remind myself that she and Candace were not mother and daughter.

One in a while, there is that one actor or actress that just makes you fall in love with them the moment you see them on the screen, and Candace is one such actress. To be honest, she is so charismatic and effervescent on the screen, she could probably turn any role into pure gold.  As I said in the review of the first film, I believe this is a role Candace was born to play. While I adore her in every role I’ve ever seen of hers, this one is particularly well-suited to her capabilities.  Finally, she has a role that lets her prove just how well she can handle comedy, drama, suspense, and more. Whenever she is on the screen, not only does she shine, but her sparkle highlights and brings out the talents of those around her. It takes something special to be able to bring out the best in all and not overshadow their skills.  I can hardly wait for the next one in the series!

I’m just saying I loved in the book where roe finds the body in the kitchen of the club, and not found by the master at her home.
Some things I don’t get why they change from book to movie, I feel you could just of kept a lot the same.

I don’t know why things change, Amber. Sometimes it’s just the way it is. There is so much that goes into adapting books, and sometimes things just don’t translate on screen. I am not an expert, unfortunately.

I love this series. Candice Cameron Bure is superb. So glad Marilu Henner plays her Mom. Only downside was that the killers were (as in the first movie) a couple who worked together on the murders. The movie did have its twists and turns and I kept leaning towards this couple but yet I hoped it wasn’t them because it was too much like the first movie. I would just suggest that they don’t keep having the murderer(s) be couples. That was disappointing, but I loved everything else about this movie and look forward to many more. Thanks.

Great review. Do you know if Robin Dunne will play a recurring role like Marilu Henner?
