Well #Hearties, I bring you the next installment of my When Calls the Heart upcoming episode mini-reviews. We are only a little over a week from the season finale, and I can’t thank all of you enough for giving me almost “celebrity” status. I adore your feedback and encouragement. So without any further ado, let’s jump into the review of Coming Together, Coming Apart.

POTENTIAL SPOILER ALERT: TURN BACK NOW IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE EPISODE!

Longtime followers know that I have a knack for not revealing too much, but if you don’t want to know anything about Saturday’s episode, do not read on. For everyone else, here we go!

Sadly, there are not a lot of photos that have been released for this episode, but no worries there my friends.  But we’ll work with the photos we have. Onto the story at hand.

coming apart
Fair warning–you will see a lot of Julie and Tom in this episode.  And if you have watched the previews, you might be able to surmise what is going on. And I’ll admit that the pictures do kind of give it away.

coming apart 2

Of course, the burning questions are–Does Julie tell the truth? Does Elizabeth’s father press charges against Tom? Does Tom make a fresh start?  Well, #hearties, I’m not going to divulge this information. But I will tell you that my favorite story of the episode concerns these two. The writers handled the scenes between them  (and those who interact with them) tremendously. I was as pleased as could be, and maybe this picture will give you a hint of things to come.

coming apart 3

For everyone’s sake, I sincerely hope that Julie and Tom start to take responsibility for their actions. I have grown to love the two of them together, so I hope they stick around on into season three (I know I’m assuming there’s going to be a season three, but isn’t that a no brainer?). All I will say is that their story gave me more hope than any other part of the episode.  So if you are looking for heart and hope, this is the couple to watch!

lee rosemary

So what about Lee and Rosemary? Well, their story this week is one of great humor and pathos. Yes, I did say both. I was enraptured with how Rosie gets to utilize her acting skills (what ensues did not surprise me). However, it’s not just hearts and flowers for this couple.  In fact, I think their relationship may begin to crumble before it starts. And why do I say that? Oh no, #Hearties, you will have to wait.

nora bill

And what of Nora and Bill? Well, I will admit I don’t care as much for Bill as I did. Based on last week, I do applaud him for his noble actions concerning Nora and her father. But I always felt that Nora was not quite all there.  I don’t trust her character in any way, and I sense that Bill wants to leave, but he is torn because of his affinity for his father-in-law.  You will see an incredible amount of emotion and some dramatic moments in this story line this week, but that’s all I will say on that point.

If you have watched the previews (and/or read the synopsis), you will know that Mr. Gowan is concocting another scheme. He is still smarting after losing the money and railroad to Lee, but it is evident he has not given up. I feel for Abigail in this episode, but I think you will applaud the way she takes charge of the situation. Then again, Abigail is always stalwart when she cares deeply about something. And you will witness the exchange between her and Mr. Gowen–classic Abigail indeed!

Those of you who miss the children (like I do) are going to revel in the schoolroom scenes. I still would prefer to see more scenes with the children, but this is by far the most we have seen them all season. And in case you’re wondering, Feisty Flo will be there too. After all, remember, she is the substitute teacher.  Just between you and me, I never thought she would make a good substitute teacher, and all too soon, you will know exactly what I mean.

frank abigailHere’s the really bizarre thing for me. If anyone asked me at the beginning of season two to whom Abigail should give her heart, I would have said–Bill! I was smitten with them as a couple. And after the first couple episodes, I was certain they were a couple of destiny. But that fateful day when Nora showed up changed everything. I wasn’t sure that I thought of the new minister in town, but he has begun to grow on me. He truly begins to open up to Abigail in this episode, and I now think maybe, as my daughter said, “They were meant to be.” I don’t know if that’s true, but it’s an intriguing thought.

love triangle

And of course, this is the question of the hour. Will Elizabeth ever make up her mind  and make what #hearties believe is the only choice? I really don’t fault Jack and the nurse.  I’ve believed all along that Jack was a perfect gentleman and only saw her as a means to an end–to help his brother. And I figure that Elizabeth had no right to judge since she was still carrying on with Charles.

Not going to lie here–you’re not going to see warm and fuzzy Jack and Elizabeth scenes this week. And if you watch the previews, you know that the money and social position has become an issue. Elizabeth’s father does something rather cold, calculated, and underhanded.  I was flabbergasted near the end when Elizabeth almost repeated her father’s words verbatim.

Now as shocking and upsetting as the conclusion was between Jack and Elizabeth, I see a glimmer of hope. I have been saying that Elizabeth needs to examine who she really is and where she genuinely belongs. I don’t doubt how she feels about Jack, and I believe the feeling is mutual. Notwithstanding, I a, convinced both are a bit scared about what a relationship and eventual marriage would mean to them. There is plenty to consider. So instead of yelling, screaming, and stomping your feet (I think I did all three), let me encourage you to view their dissension as a positive. All long-standing relationships have to undergo difficulties and uncertain times. If a relationship can survive these hardships, they often emerge as stronger and much closer. On the other hand, if the relationship dissolves during these hard times, it was never meant to be.

One thing I will say about Charles. I never liked him, but this week’s episode caused me to despise him with a vengeance. I won’t tell you why, but if I even thought he was a nice guy who deserved someone at least as good as Elizabeth, I have to say that I now think he deserves nothing good in this life, and the sooner he leaves the series, the better! It even happened at a point when I held out such hope for Elizabeth.  My daughter and I were both completely confounded.

So what is my opinion? This show is must-see television, and I encourage anyone who enjoys quality programming to watch this show. While some fans are continually perturbed because Jack and Elizabeth are not together yet, just consider this for a moment. If a show is able to take you on an emotional roller coaster every week but still keep the integrity of the show, then it is certainly a testament to the creators, actors, and supporters of this phenomenal show.

You really know how to get our juices flowing when you tell us all we have to look forward to when we watch WCTH tomorrow night. I,for one, can hardly wait. I think about the fact that I was, in my younger days, so addicted to Janette Oke’s books. I think that I read everyone in the library. The writers have adapted Elizabeth to more modern times without losing sight of the original character. She was much more independent in the early books. For instance, she would have respected her parents but have never let her father influence her as he does now. I am wondering what will be the cliffhanger to be dangled so we will be salivating over Season three. I know. They haven’t promised us a season 3. But they will.

I agree 100% Jean! Great words. I love what they have done with the series too!

I could speak verbatim for what Lisa, Bobbi and Kathy have said! I fell in love with the character of Elizabeth in Season 1 and when she is in HV this Season. I, too, hope that and wonder how the writers will redeem her of how she is acting. Love the show but as Kathy said the emotional roller coaster ride is so draining…but also in for the long haul. Thankfully, we can see Elizabeth and Jack (Daniel and Erin) on the Crown Media site, Home and Family and then this last week in DC to promote family TV shows! Look so forward to the character of Elizabeth getting straightened out and she’ll wake up soon.

Ruth, I really appreciate your insight each week. Look forward to next week as well. Have a wonderful week ahead!

Thank you again for your wonderful words Patricia. If I can get #Hearties talking about WCTH I feel like I have accomplished what I set out to do.

Thank you Ruth, I always enjoy reading your reviews, As a die hard #Heartie I am often frustrated with Elizabeth but am hoping that she will wake up soon! Hallmark has to give us season 3. The emotional roller coaster is so draining, but I am on for the long haul!

I agree that it is an emotional rollercoaster but as long as there is more hope in next week’s we’ll survive!

I agree with Lisa. It’s disappointing to me to see where they led Elizabeth’s character this year because she seems like a different person in Hamilton that she is in Hope Valley. I think we all agree we like the HV version better! Elizabeth shines in her independence from her family; they hold her back from giving her whole heart to anything but their perception of who she is! I haven’t enjoyed her journey in Season 2 and agree that Jack’s has been true and steady. It will be interesting to see how we get from the past several episodes to the loving pics reflected on the Crown Media site. But I have never been so invested in a tv show in my life…and I hope we get many more seasons to come! Thank you for your review, Ruth! I always appreciate your insight.

I know it’s tough Bobbi but i think what’s happening is exactly what the writers of the show want. I appreciate all the comments and always the kind words sent my way

Thank you once again, Ruth. I must admit to sighing heavily as I read that Charles is STILL in the picture? I was hoping, by the preview, that Elizabeth FINALLY spoke to him after everyone basically called her out last episode about carrying on with Charles, to set him straight. Elizabeth was so hard on Jack when Rosemary showed and accused him of perfidy, I expected more from her character. Why not say, “Jack, I need a break to think about things.” Instead, this educated heroine on this “family friendly tv show” has led two men on and has created quite a mess. I know…its character development but shes a different person this year and frankly, Im not a fan. I keep hoping our Elizabeth from season 1 will return. There are only 2 episodes left and Im curious to see how in the world the writers will redeem their relationship as well as Elizabeth. Jack has been true just as he said he would be. She has a great deal to apologize for. These two have been apart geographically and emotionally as my friend Laurie put it. It makes the other pictures that have been shown for the finale, in my opiniom, hard to believe and to see as plausable; just my opinion! I want season 3 so badly and Im hoping the show and characters return (including the kids!). This roller coaster ride, has had far more lows than highs but I have to have hope. Thats what Coal Valley….er..Hope Valley is all about. 😉
