This Day in History March 19, 1687

On this date in 1687, René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle (Robert LaSalle) was murdered by his own men while on an exploratory mission in Texas searching for the Mississippi River. He was only 43, and his body was left outside for the animals to eat. Talk about crazy!

Ecclesiastes 8:7-8 (NIV)

7 Since no one knows the future,
who can tell someone else what is to come?
8 As no one has power over the wind to contain it,
so[a] no one has power over the time of their death.
As no one is discharged in time of war,
so wickedness will not release those who practice it.

Wow, that’s so crazy, it’s incredible that there’s so much in history that isn’t shared.

Sheesh, poor Robert LaSalle. Really, if his men didn’t want to continue on (due to illness or whatever), you’d think they’d just sneak away & leave him on his own. When they got home all his men had to say was Oh Gee, he wandered off & we couldn’t find him! Interesting Day in History tho.

This is such a cool section! I like getting little tidbits about history, easily memorable stories. Hated history in school. It never got into the interesting stuff to me. I guess I’d like to know about the “common” people that are alive during the events it talks about. What it was like living during the Civil War, folklore that drove decisions, that type of stuff. I’m super curious now about *why* Robert LaSalle was killed by his own men, so I’m gonna pop over to Wikipedia to see if it says anything. Crazy to be killed by people you probably handpicked to join your expedition. And then to just be left out for animals to eat? It just shows a complete lack of respect for the guy and how there was no remorse. Stop typing, Sarah, go read Wikipedia!

That was an interesting bit of history from so long ago! Was there any reason that his men did that? Were they tired of the expedition and wanting to return home?

I actually had the same question. It seems like from what I could tell that there was a lot of illnesses going on and his men didn’t want to remain there any longer. But he refused to leave. So I guess they finally killed him. Sad.

I can’t even imagine what he felt when he realized he was being betrayed by people that he trusted. Absolutely horrible
