Enjoying Genesis: The Bible in Rhym

Enjoying Genesis: The Bible in Rhym by Marcia Goldlist

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was the first time I had ever considered the possibility of the Bible being written in rhyme, and the concept itself was quite intriguing. While poetry may make the reader think it will make the Bible an easy read, think again. This is not children’s poetry nor is it a quick, simple read. The author has put a considerable amount of time into converting a mainly prosaic book into rhymed poetry. For that feat, I certainly tip my hat to the author–she has done an amazing job.

For me, some of the poetry seemed not as poetic as I would have liked (hate to be picky but I am just giving an opinion). I also felt that some of the stories of this all-important book suffered as the author attempted what is an almost insurmountable task. I am not saying the author did not do well. I merely believe that a rewrite of some portions might help. But for the most part, I was impressed with the overall concept and product–I recommend checking it out for something a little different.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

enjoying genesisEnjoying Genesis: The Bible in Rhyme is the book of Genesis written in rhyming couplets. It is meant for anyone for whom the Bible is important or just curious to finally be able to read the bestselling book of all times pleasurably. Almost all the text of the book of Genesis is included, with minimal interpretation.
The Bible is meant for young and old, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, religious and non-affiliated; simply put: everyone. But the Bible is a hard book to read and understand. By putting the book of Genesis into rhyme it is less intimidating, and its easy flow will entice reluctant readers to read on.

This book is ideal:

  • for families to use either formally or informally in the home
  • for family discussions around the table
  • to promote reading together as a family
  • for bedtime stories
  • as a stepping stone to reading the Bible alone for pre-teens and young teenagers
  • for adults who want to learn about religion or the Bible by themselves or in a group setting
  • anyone who wants to get their feet wet with the bestselling book of all times
  • anyone who wants to read the “good book” in an enjoyable easy to read format

In short, Enjoying Genesis: The Bible in Rhyme is meant to be read just as someone would read the Bible, but with the added bonus of seeing more smiles and having more people understand these important stories.

This sounds wonderful. It is hard to explain the bible to young children and this makes it more interesting to them too I bet!! I will check her out. Thanks for sharing!
