Juliet’s Nurse by Lois Leveen

I first read the story of “Romeo and Juliet” when I was in junior high, and I studied it in depth in high school. So reading a book about Juliet’s nurse sounded rather intriguing. I always loved the character in the story, and this book gave me a look at this often-overlooked woman. I was not sure what to expect, but I can say this book is definitely a modern-day classic.

As I became engrossed in this book, the twists and turns in the well-known story took me by surprise. I wasn’t even sure I liked the direction the story was going. However, by the second half of the story, I appreciated the author’s perspective. And the book was so well-researched, I fully embraced the story the author told. It is a plausible story.

For me, the book was a heavy read, but I didn’t see that as an issue–it is a modern-day classic. What I will say is that there is some profanity and crude words–I’m sure that was period and went with the story, but I want to caution readers lest you think this is a problem. There were times I did lose interest in the book, but it always came back within a short period of time.
