Many people have difficulty storing everything that they own. In extreme circumstances, they need to get rid of a lot of their old things. However, they can usually find other solutions.

Here are some things that you may want to do to store everything that you accumulated over the years.

Look for Less Obvious Storage Spaces
You can probably find a number of storage spots that you didn’t think of before. You can probably store a number of small knick-knacks on your window sills or by mounting them on your walls. Of course, you will want to make sure that the items are appropriate for the place that you are storing them. Small candles and ornaments will probably fit in perfectly in a window sill.

Buy Taller Chests and Drawers
You will obviously need a number of drawers and storage units to keep things in. Of course, all of these things take up space. Fortunately, you can often increase your storage capacity by 20-30% by simply buying taller chests and drawers. You will want to make sure that you can still access them easily, but finding units that have more vertical storage capacity may be the right place to look.

Use Multi-purpose Furniture
We have become accustomed to thinking that every piece of furniture has a single purpose. A chest was always made for storing items and a bed was always made for sleeping. However, designers are becoming much more creative about designing multi-purpose pieces of furniture.

Many beds are designed with small storage spaces under them. You may need to keep this in mind the next time that you are purchasing a bed. You can also consider buying a storage ottoman. These pieces of furniture can serve as storage spaces, coffee tables, foot rests or a small area to play a game of cards when entertaining your friends.

Know When to Consider Other Alternatives
There are many things that you can do to increase the storage space in your house. Unfortunately, there are going to be times that you will still have more than you can keep. You will have a couple of options:

Consider finding an offsite storage unit to use for extra things that you own.
Start throwing away or selling some of the old things that you own
You will want to be selective about the things that you get rid, of course. This means that you will need to take inventory of your possessions and prioritize things that need to be kept in your house. This can be hard for many people that have a hard time letting go, but you will be able to decide what to keep when you force yourself to be objective.
