EXCERPT
Rema’s eyes flew open. Everything around her was calm. She felt her key necklace against her chest and rolled over, closing her eyes and trying to fall back asleep.
Soft whispers drifted toward her and she strained her ears, listening.
“Please, I beg you, don’t fight. You can stay back where it’s safe.” It sounded like Neco, but she wasn’t sure.
“I understand your concern,” Ellie answered. “But I promised Maya I would watch out for Rema.”
“Neither one of you should be there when we go in.”
She sighed. “I know you’re worried, but I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself. You know that.”
“I do,” he responded. “It’s just that, I’ve never been in battle knowing the woman I loved was in it, too.” There was a shuffling sound. “And I’ve never had anything to live for, until now. If I died, it was always for a good cause. Now I don’t want to die. I want to live—with you by my side.”
This was a conversation Rema should not be hearing. She rolled over, making as much noise as possible.
