Hopeful by Shelley Shephard Gray

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I am growing quite weary of “Christian Amish romances” that do not deliver what is promised. When I pick up a book in this genre, I have an expectation that I will read about a simple life, have a little romance, and read about how these amazing people solve the issues of their world. It is a mini-vacation, and they have become one of my favorite genres to read. And in all fairness, this book has the major elements that an Amish story needs. In fact, as I read through most of the book, I was found myself becoming quite immersed in the romance and community. The author even added in a few secrets that added some excitement to what could have been a dull story. And, of course, unrequited love always makes a story more intriguing. I could have done with a few more references to God, but it was good to see the people in the book turning to God in their times of distress. I could not question their faith.

So what is my complaint? Well, just about the time that I was beginning to understand and fancy the characters, the story ended. Rather abruptly, I must say. It was almost as if the author determined that the book was long enough, and that was the end. I felt like I was left hanging, and it was not the kind that of desire that could be fulfilled by a sequel. But I was a quick read, so if you want something light and clean, this just may be it.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

HopefulReturn to Sugarcreek, Book One

In the Amish town of Sugarcreek, love comes in many forms. But will it come at all for Miriam?

Miriam Zehr has worked at the Sugarcreek Inn longer than she cares to admit. The restaurant is a favorite of town residents as well as the many tourists who come to taste the famous Amish fare. Though she always tries to have a smile for every customer, deep down Miriam knows something’s missing: a family of her own.

Miriam has never felt particularly beautiful, especially because she’s always been a bit heavier than other girls her age. When Junior, the man she’s pined for all her life, suddenly seeks her out, she’s thrilled to be noticed . . . until she realizes he’s only asking her to help get the attention of Mary Kathryn Hershberger, her pretty friend.

If Miriam helps Junior court Mary Kathryn, she’ll get to spend a lot of time with him, but she might lose him in the process. Are these few stolen moments worth a lifetime of sacrifice? Is Miriam right to even hope for the life she dreams of?
