The ColonyThe Colony by Cami Checketts

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Where should I begin when reviewing such a fascinating book as this? Let me begin by saying this is an absolutely clean story that would appeal to young adults as well as older adults. I believe there is something here for everyone, and I can recommend it without reservation to anyone who delights in a captivating story. This is the third book I have read from this author, and her books never cease to astound me.

One of my favorite things about this author’s books is that they are edgy without going too far over the edge. She deals with real issues–teenage pregnancy, single moms, abortion, and more. She deals with each topic in a fair and just way. She is careful to point out missteps, but she demonstrates that it is never too late to make a modification in your behavior. You don’t have to keep going down the same road. Everyone has a choice.

I also appreciate the fact that the author throws in a lot of twists and turns along the way. Her romances are never just that. I was not always certain which guy would get the girl in the end. And some of the story line truly took me by surprise. I did feel the story ended a little too abruptly, but I truly don’t see that as a problem. This is a book for which I would love to see a sequel that focuses on the people involved in the “colony.” Her books do tend to have a staying power that many don’t. What I mean by that is that the story is so involving that I don’t soon forget it.

Her book did make me wonder how many “colonies” exist similar to the one she elucidated in the book. We only hear about communities like this where major tragedies occur. She did point out that whenever people try to make a utopian society, it never seems to work the way it does on paper. There is honestly no such thing, and I think the author treats it equitably.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

I appreciate this review. Its hard sometimes to tell just from the back. You gave a review of the way the book was written not just the catchy line of what happens. Knowing that the subject is written in such a way really helps
