My rating: 4 of 5 stars
First of all, permit me to explain that this is the first book in the series I have read. I realize this is the end of the trilogy, but I had no trouble jumping right into the action. It is a fairly simple book to join “in process.” This meets its target audience in that there is no sex, violence, nor profanity. It is a clean read, and if your tweens love fantasy, this may be just the book for them.
Although the book is well-written for its targeted audience, I do have one minor criticism. I felt that the book was often rather dark and heavy. I never felt that there was a light, comical moment, and it dealt with serious issues. Seeing how this is a “coming of age” fantasy, I suppose I can understand and appreciate that. And perhaps if I had read the other two books first, I may have been able to appreciation the somber tone. I just would have enjoyed some humor to mix things up a bit. I can always tolerate fantasy novels much more when that is included.

You raise an interesting point about the darkness of the third book. I’d be curious to hear what Kirstin thinks because now that you say it, I would say that the third in isolation is the darkest of the three and has the most tension, but the other two also deal with dark themes. There is a lack of comical moments in the books but I think in this case, they would feel out of place. They really are like an old-style fairy tale which do tend to be dark (albeit with happy endings). Great point though! Thanks for taking part in the Princess Madeline and the Dragon Blog Tour!

I do plan to read the other two books, and maybe I will understand more of the full story. I often forget that the old-style fairy tales are dark without humor. Disney has changed our perception of fairy tales. Thanks for your response.
