Katie Detweiler grew up Amish, never knowing she was adopted as an infant. Now an adult, her new job as cook at an Amish bed and breakfast doesn’t bring about the euphoria she hoped for. Just as she’s getting her menu perfected, the Englisch family and severely ill sister she never knew existed enter her life and strain her Amish relationships. Plus, Katie suddenly has two different men vying for her attention—one Amish, one Englisch—and she wonders if one of them could be the man of her dreams. But when her Englisch sister’s health worsens, Katie must find a way to balance her heart, her job, and her faith while risking her own life for the sister she never knew.

The Amish of Webster County

(Guest Post by the author)

I set my first two Amish series in Webster County, Missouri, near Seymour. Like most Amish settlements, the Amish located near Seymour, Missouri, resist progress. They are Swiss-German Amish, so they drive buggies without tops, without enclosed cabs, and without rubber tires. They settled in Webster County in 1968, buying rundown farms and restoring them.

The Amish men are farmers; however, with rising prices, many are forced to work outside the home. Most work as carpenters. They either work for another carpenter remodeling houses for Englischers or they have their own small carpentry business.

Amish women are skilled in maintaining homes. They grow very large gardens and preserve what they harvest. Their clothing is hand-sewn. They quilt, and in addition to housework, they help with the outside chores as needed.

Amish people enjoy work frolics such as building barns, quilting, and canning. They also enjoy fun frolics like singing. They don’t use musical accompaniment, but they do yodel like they do in Switzerland.  They travel a lot from community to community. They even go out of state for weddings and visits with family and friends. They hire drivers with vans or ride buses. Weddings usually have as many as four hundred people in attendance.

Church is held every other Sunday in individual homes or barns. Lunch is served to as many as two hundred people. The meal usually includes lunch meats, breads and cheese for sandwiches, or other foods that can be made in advance and served cold. Young people play softball, basketball and other active games and the young men wrestle to see who is the strongest

Originally the Webster County Amish sent their children to public school, but when schools started adding computers and other modern technology they established their own schools.

While the Amish in Webster County, Missouri resist progress, they provide a simpler life for their families as they work and play together, striving to do God’s will in their every day living.
