The catch

The book, Summer in the City, 2006, by Vic Siegel, photos edited by Claus Guglberger, annotations by Richard Slovak, shows a crystal-clear print of this photo on page 126. It was taken by Frank Hurley of the New York Daily News. All the photos in that book are from the News.

So, I’m not a baseball fan in any sense of the word, but even I have to admit this is an amazing catch.  On this date in 1954, Willie Mays made his famous over-the-shoulder catch in World Series Game One.  This is iconically referred to as “the Catch.”  This kept the Cleveland Indians from stepping into the lead, and the New York Giants won this game and eventually swept the series.
