Jimmy Dean“I used to help my granddaddy make sausage. He would mix it up in a cleaned-out washtub with his hands, no gloves. Man, if we did anything like that today, they would jack the jail up and throw us under it.”

I learned something this morning.  Jimmy Dean was a real person, not just a sausage company.  On this date in 1928, Jimmy Dean was born.  He was from Plainview, Texas, and his early music interest originated in church.  He dropped out of high school and became an entertainer.  His first hit was in 1953 with Bummin’ Around.  And as I researched him, I realized I knew one of his songs–Big Bad John.

In 1969, he and his brother Don founded the Jimmy Dean Sausage company.  Honestly, that is my favorite brand of sausage, and I just had one of their breakfast sandwiches this morning.  He died on my birthday (June 13) in 2010, and he had to be inducted into the Country Hall of Fame posthumously.

I think the kids in school that laughed at the clothes that we wore and the house that we lived in and then my mother had to cut hair … I think that was a good motivator. Every time they laughed at me, they just built a fire and there was only one way to put it out—to try and show ’em I was as good as they were.”
