students go gourmet

So do you happen to have a student going off to college or maybe a child moving out on his/her own for the first time?  I don’t, but I knew this would be a book worth my time and effort.  I will be sharing my opinion with you, and maybe you will find that this is the perfect gift for that adult child of yours!

Blurb:

If you’re about to dial 1-800-PIZZA for those late night cram sessions but would rather not put on an extra 10 pounds by the time finals are over…

If you have a knife but don’t know how to use it;

If you’re a busy, broke beginner at the burners but still want to fire up a quick, classic risotto;
If you want to impress your guests (friends, professors, family, dates) with three-course meals from Istanbul to South Beach;
If you can’t tell the difference between microplanes and microfiche;
If you need a guide to snazzy brunch fare hits;
If you’re keen on bringing classy appetizers to a potluck or a barbecue;
If you’re ready to spice up your mac ‘n cheese;
If you’re looking for the perfect birthday, graduation, or holiday gift for students, family, friends, girlfriends, or boyfriends;
…you’ve come to the right place.

From boiling eggs to three-course dinners, homemade sweet and savory ice cream to foolproof bechamel sauce, Students Go Gourmet is a must-have on the campus kitchen shelf.

Instead of ordering take-out, feed your inner gourmand by watching our included instructional DVD as we bring the flavors of the world into your kitchen and onto your table. Our cookbook will stay with you long after the cap and gown!
Authors: Sophia Khan is a world traveler and recent graduate of Yale and Harvard who through her studies, Greek and Pakistani ancestry, and cultural experiences has learned to prepare fast and delicious food. Her aunt, Dr. Ellen Bass, a self-proclaimed Francophile, adds her experience as an award-winning pediatrician and working mom to compliment the recipes with fresh and healthy ingredients. Both students of highly acclaimed academic institutions, they understand first-hand the challenges of eating healthy under demanding schedules.
Book: Through recipes inspired from her studies abroad in Italy, England, Scotland and China, Khan’s cultural curiosity shows through in her sweet and savory combinations, accentuated with experimental fusion of spices evident in her Cajun Sugar Popcorn, Moroccan Stuffed Shells with Curried Béchamel and Pakistani Cardamom Almond Ice Cream – to name just a few. “Most of the few existing cookbooks that target students are unappealing and pander to generic themes,” says Kahn. “We don’t patronize college kids with dull meals, and we take special pains to factor in their time and budgetary constraints.”
With delicious recipes from finger food/appetizers to delightful “4-star” meals, in STUDENTS GO GOURMET, readers learn:
  • How simple it is to cook healthy and fresh on a limited budget
  • The necessary ingredients and tools needed to stock a pantry for ready-to-use ease
  • How to curb the late night munchies with unique finger foods guaranteed to give you some energy
  • How to prepare a full meal for guests inspired by eclectic cities around the world that will “wow” even the most picky palate
  • How to actually cook through a complimentary video and the user-friendly, easily referenced directory which categorizes the food, explains cooking terms and equipment needed

* A portion of the proceeds of the book will be donated to sustainable post-hurricane redevelopment efforts in the Ninth Ward in New Orléans.

BIOS: Sophia Khan is a world traveler and student of life who loves to fuse flavors from different cuisines. She recently received master’s degrees from Yale and Harvard. Dr. Ellen Bass is an award-winning pediatrician and mother of four who derives her culinary inspiration from the cuisine of France. She received her M.P.H. from Yale and M.D. from Georgetown.

So what did I think?  First of all, I admit that I would not have used this in college.  I lived in the dorm, and there would not have been a chance.  But I married young, and I can assure you I would have used it then!  I was a pretty good cook, but I was never turned on to gourmet cooking.  This takes the scariness away from gourmet cooking.  All supplies are listed in the beginning, and for each recipe, both the ingredients and equipment are listed (this is a great idea–for every cookbook).   I also like the fact that the estimated price for each meal is listed.  That is very important when one is being frugal.

After all the main recipes are listed, there is a section that explains about party etiquette.  It then goes on to describe party-themed dinners, and I have to admit that I couldn’t see a college student doing these.  But then again, I didn’t run with the crowd that even had parties.  I would like to try some of these myself if I ever have a party because they sound simple, easy, tasty, and frugal!
A genius part of this book is that it comes with an instructional DVD.  If that is not keeping up with the times, I don’t know what is.
