I was surprised to discover that this happened so early in television history.  On this date in 1951, the very first sporting event was broadcast in color on television.  It was the Molly Pitcher Handicap horse race from Monmouth Park Jockey Club, Oceanport, N.J.  Unfortunately, most did not see it in color since color TV’s were not readily available until the 1960’s.

Well, who knew? My family was one of the first on our street to get a black and white TV (before I was born) and one of the last to get a color TV (in time for one of the Super Bowls–can’t recall which one!)

    Love trivia. Thanks for sharing.

1951 was before my time, but I remember having a black and white TV when I was younger. Not sure when we got our first color set. It is always fun to look back–hubby and I were talking about commercials and how we can still sing the jingles to this day. Powerful medium!!

My mom was around during that time, but they didn’t get a color TV until some time in the 1960’s. But they had a special thing that theyp ut over the TV set to make it look like it was color.
