Today in History: June 13–Sewing Machine Day

Maybe you noticed my “This Day in History” post did not get published today.  I am very sorry, but it was my birthday, my daughter’s birthday, and her last day of school.  In addition to this, I woke up feeling very sick early this morning, but thank God it passed!

So I thought I would do a different kind of “history” post, and I think I will do this from now on when I do miss a history post.  Today is (was) Sewing Machine Day.  I don’t know about you, but I have some pretty fond memories of the sewing machine as I was growing up.  My mom did some sewing, and I even tried my hand at it.  My mom actually made my wedding dress (that’s correct, and then I had to give it up when I left Texas, but that’s fine since I’m divorced now).

Back in 1790, Thomas Saint patented the first sewing machine.  It quickly became an icon of the Industrial Revolution.  Can you imagine the joy that the housewife felt when she no longer had to make and mend clothes by hand?  We take it all for granted now, and the art of sewing is a thing that is somewhat in the past.  However, I am sure all of us know that the beauty of handmade clothing is something that just cannot be topped!
