I did not know about this horse until the Disney movie came out, I will admit.  But it was on this date in 1973, that Secretariat won the Belmont stakes, thus being the first horse to win the Triple Crown in 25 years.  Indeed, it was an amazing race as you can see in the video above.  I was amazed to find out that after all these years, Secretariat still holds a world record.  He ran the Belmont Stakes–one and a half miles–in 2:24.  He also won by the widest margin in the history of American turf: 31 lengths ahead of the horse that came in second.

Indeed, a monument to an amazing horse who will hopefully never be forgotten!
