Have any of you ever seen the film The Great Escape?  It is a fantastic film that is based on fact (with many changes to what actually happened).  However, that film  has probably made this incident extremely popular and well-remembered.  It was on this date in 1944, that the Great Escape of Stalag Luft III began.  The plan had been well underway for some time, and a massive tunnel was dug under the Stalag.  The plan had been to get 200 prisoners out, but as it stood, only 76 escaped.  Of those 76, only three made it home, 26 were recaptured, and 50 were murdered.  Although not completely historically accurate, I would highly recommend checking out the film.  And for more information:
